Their drive, insights, and collaboration have left a strong mark on the Concrete Strategies team. 👷♂️ Evan – Field Engineer Intern, Missouri S&T “One thing I discovered is that there’s much more involved in bringing a project to life than most people realize. I really enjoyed working with my co-workers and fellow interns—they made the experience both productive and enjoyable. Spending the summer in Florida was also a refreshing change of scenery. My goal now is to apply everything I’ve learned during this internship to my next role after I graduate this December.” 👷♂️ Peyton – Safety Engineer Intern, Indiana University “I’ve learned a lot down here working on the confidential project in Florida. Some key learnings consist of problem solving, communication, and getting a better overall understanding of identifying potential hazards. Being in the field a ton has helped give me more hands-on exposure and experience. This goes a long way because I conduct daily site walks to identify potential hazards and help find ways to prevent injuries from happening.” 👷♂️ Cole – Field Engineer Intern, East Carolina University “Over the summer I have gained experience in both the office and the field. In the field I have supervised daily activities along with ordering concrete and completing takeoffs for that amount. In the office I have been able to put lookahead schedules together, while also tracking the work that is being completed. My favorite part of the internship has been being able to contribute to the team and make a difference on the project.” 👏 Thanks to Evan, Peyton, and Cole for bringing energy, insight, and dedication to the team. This summer, we’re proud to welcome Ethan, a Field Engineer Intern based in Iowa, to the team! Ethan is currently studying at Missouri S&T, bringing curiosity, drive, and a strong work ethic to every task. Here’s what Ethan had to say about his time with us so far: “I’ve spent time scheduling concrete will calls, pumps, and overseeing rebar procurement. I’ve also led sustainability reporting to the owner and GC, prepared submittals, and written RFIs. Concrete Strategies Gives Back - This week, team members from Concrete Strategies had the honor of volunteering at the Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry. We rolled up our sleeves to sort donations and prepare food for distribution to local families in need. The Ritenour Co-Care Food Pantry serves qualifying residents within the Ritenour School District, offering them the dignity of food by choice. Our interns recently had the opportunity to tour the Holcim Cement Plant, and it was more than just a visit—it was a hands-on learning experience that brought classroom knowledge to life. From seeing the cement manufacturing process up close to exploring the rock quarry and observing Holcim’s impressive multi-modal shipping operations (by barge, train, and truck!), the group gained a new appreciation for the scale and complexity behind this essential material. One of the highlights? Watching a robot create and test cement cubes—a powerful example of how technology is enhancing quality and efficiency in the field. Thank you to the team at Holcim—Jeff Fortner and Rusty Owings—for hosting our group and sharing your expertise. And kudos to our interns for staying curious, asking great questions, and soaking up every moment! Here’s what a few of our interns had to say: “I had a great time on the field trip. It was nice to get a refresher on how cement is manufactured because I had a class on it this past semester. The plant is also way bigger than I was expecting, and the rock quarry was very cool to see… Their robot that made and tested cubes of cement was also very interesting.” — Cannon “One of the first things that surprised me was that the plant runs 24/7, only stopping briefly once a year for maintenance… Their testing of both their own product and their competitors' stood out to me. They clearly take pride in their quality and work hard to stay ahead of the industry.” — Grant “It was insane to me how much of an investment it is to start a cement plant—around $1.4 billion!… Seeing the series of crushers and the high-tech control center was eye-opening, and the kiln heating to 2,700°F was one of the coolest parts. This week, we were proud to host the Beyond These Walls Career Prep Program—a powerful initiative focused on preparing young adults (18+) for careers in the trades. Over just a few days, participants earned more than 30 industry-recognized certifications including Forklift, CPR/First Aid/AED, and OSHA 10, all through hands-on training at our Hazelwood warehouse. We’re proud to support initiatives that provide real-world skills, hands-on learning, and life-changing opportunities.
