  • In honor of back-to-school season, meet Jacob, a patient from City of Hope Children’s Cancer Center, who's giving us a peek into his "magical backpack" full of wonder. From colored pencils for creative expression to Pokémon cards and his homemade meme bookmark, Jacob shows us that learning happens best when we combine the essentials with the things that spark joy. As we kick off another school year, let's remember that the best backpacks aren't just filled with supplies — they're packed with personality, curiosity and the tools that help us learn and grow.

  • At just 9 years old, cancer survivor Everett Long has already shown what it means to be strong — and kind. After his successful bone marrow transplant at City of Hope Children's Cancer Center, Everett and his family wanted to find a special way to give back to the community that supported them. Throughout his treatment, gaming helped the nine-year-old stay connected to loved ones. Together, Everett and his dad embarked on a mission: track down a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2 and generously donated it to City of Hope. Their hope is that this gift will bring strength, fun, and connection to pediatric patients. Thank you, Everett and Long family, for your incredibly thoughtful gift.

  • Supportive care should be a standard part of cancer treatment — not an afterthought. From counseling and spiritual care to pain management and decision-making support, it’s more important than ever that we care for the whole person, not just the disease. A powerful Essence article co-written by Sheri Biller underscores the need for this kind of approach, especially in communities of color, where the emotional toll of cancer often stretches far beyond the diagnosis — into long waiting rooms, overwhelming paperwork, and feelings of isolation. City of Hope is committed to changing that experience and is proud to partner with The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation and the Together for Supportive Cancer Care Coalition in that work. • The patient burden is shifting for many cancers, and that is especially true for lung cancer, which is increasingly impacting nonsmokers and younger people. It’s a concerning trend that City of Hope is working to address by expanding access to risk assessments, advocating for age-specific research, and advancing clinical trials tailored to different patient populations. These efforts aim to improve outcomes and preserve quality of life for those who may not fit traditional risk profiles. In this The New York Times article, Jae Kim, M.D., chief of thoracic surgery at City of Hope, commented on the possible role of family history and gene mutations in driving lung cancer among female nonsmokers. His perspective underscores the importance of early detection and personalized treatment strategies for this population. Read the article: https://nyti.ms/4fhacQ6

  • Congratulations to Celina Barbosa, B.S.N., a registered nurse at City of Hope, on receiving a DAISY Award (The DAISY Foundation) for extraordinary leadership, compassion and clinical excellence under the most challenging circumstances. One colleague shared: “Ms. Barbosa led the transfer to ICU for a patient in critical condition and remained at the bedside for the next five hours. She rose to the occasion with courage and unwavering commitment to both the patient and the healthcare team. In every aspect of this difficult situation — caring for a grieving family and supporting her colleagues — Ms. Barbosa exemplified the highest standards of professional integrity, compassion and clinical skill.” We are proud to honor nurses like Celina who bring hope and healing when it matters most.
