On this day in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed, putting regulations in place for businesses and guaranteeing certain rights to individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. The ADA gives access to, prevents discrimination against, and promotes inclusion for individuals with disabilities when it comes to employment, schools, public accommodations, transportation, service animals, and more. As we come to the close of Disability Pride Month, Chimes proudly celebrates Disability Independence Day! #disabilityawareness #disabilitypride #disabilityindependence

We’re still feeling the impact of such a powerful day, and we’re excited to share even more photos that capture the energy, connection, and purpose of the ribbon cutting of the Outdoor Adaptive Therapeutic Center at The Chimes School. The support Chimes received continues to uplift us, and these photos are just a glimpse of the collective impact we’re building together.

Today, numerous Maryland State Legislators, disability advocates, Chimes staff members and most importantly The Chimes School students celebrated the brand new, state-of-the-art fully accessible playground in northern Baltimore City. The new Outdoor Adaptive Therapeutic Center (OATC) is a vibrant, welcoming space for The Chimes School students and other community groups as well. Every inch of the playground was thoughtfully designed and constructed so that youth of all abilities can engage, explore, and play together without barriers. As Chimes moves onto the second phase of the project, The OATC playground will serve as a model for similar play spaces for young people with disabilities across Maryland and across the country! We extend our heartfelt thanks to Senator Dalya Attar, Senator Craig Zucker, Delegate Malcolm Ruff, Delegate Sandy Rosenberg, and Delegate Sean Stinnett for their participation and thoughtful remarks, as well as to Kirsten Bosak from the Maryland Department of Disabilities, and muralist Christina de Guzman Jones. This Tuesday was a milestone day for Chimes as the first cohort of the new Chimes Leadership Development Academy celebrated their graduation! Over the past year, the academy provided some of our next generation leaders with the resources and guidance they need to take on roles of increasing responsibility. Chimes is thrilled to see how they will continue to help us carry out our mission of supporting people with disabilities and mental health challenges. We celebrated 12 graduates this week and our next cohort of 23 graduates already started their journey that will continue over the next 12 months!  Congratulations to all grads and new cohort members and thank you to Ernest Jackson, Director of Mentorship and Professional Growth for Chimes, for launching and growing this important new initiative. #leadership

Our community came alive with creativity, and connection during a joyful Art Day in Virginia, hosted by our Chimes Foundation team. We were honored to welcome Mia Pisani from Delegate Holly Seibold's office and Aeshah Sheikh from The Office of Senator Saddam Azlan Salim - thank you for sharing in the magic and supporting our community! Art gives us all a way to share our stories, spark joy, and see each other in new, beautiful ways.

As we look back on Pride Month, we’re proud of our team for representing across our footprint. Chimes partnered with The Arc to walk in the PRIDE parade, standing together in support of the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re especially excited to share some fun moments from that amazing day!
