FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Thomas County Schools Awarded Federal Grant for Smart Manufacturing Pilot Program THOMASVILLE, GA — Thomas County Schools has been awarded a federal grant through the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission to support the launch of a Smart Manufacturing Pilot this fall at Thomas County Central High School. This initiative is part of a broader regional effort to enhance workforce development through innovative educational programming. The pilot project will be conducted in collaboration with the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute, Georgia AIM (America’s Industrial Model), and Check-Mate Industries, a local advanced manufacturing company based in Thomasville. The program is designed to immerse high school students in cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and data analytics, with instruction provided by Georgia Tech faculty and staff. The 6-week course, titled Introduction to Smart Manufacturing, will offer students hands-on experience with computer-aided design (CAD), CNC machining, 3D printing, and Python-based manufacturing data analysis. The culminating project involves designing and building a 3D-printed race car, which students will test in a competitive derby format. “This program opens up opportunities our students have never had before,” said Mark Thompson, Computer Science Teacher at Thomas County Central High School. “They will not only gain hands-on experience with industry-grade tools, but also build skills in data science, design, and digital fabrication—skills that translate directly to future careers.” Key project stakeholders include Mr. Thompson, Steven Ferguson, PhD, Director of Georgia AIM, and Beka Shiver, Program Manager with the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission. The total grant-supported investment for this pilot at Thomas County Central High School is $60,000. This funding covers advanced manufacturing equipment, materials, and curriculum resources necessary to deliver the program effectively. This Smart Manufacturing Pilot reflects a growing emphasis on preparing students in Southwest Georgia for high-demand careers in engineering, robotics, and data-driven industries. ______________________ Mark D. Over the past 45 years, Charlie has worked in nearly every department, from stamping to tooling to facilities management, leaving his mark with unmatched skill and a willingness to roll up his sleeves. Whether he’s mentoring a new hire, sharing hard-earned wisdom, or jumping in to solve a problem, Charlie’s generosity and expertise have made us all better.
