About us

The Department of Conservation provides services and information that promote environmental health, economic vitality, informed land-use decisions and sound management of our state's natural resources. With a team of scientists and other dedicated professionals, the Department of Conservation administers a variety of programs vital to California's public safety, environment, and economy. The services DOC provides are designed to balance today's needs with tomorrow's obligations by fostering the wise use and conservation of energy, land and mineral resources. Division of Land Resource Protection (DLRP) The Department of Conservation administers or supports a number of programs designed to promote orderly growth in coordination with agricultural endeavors. Key DOC tools include conservation easement grants, land tax incentives, and farmland mapping and monitoring. Division of Mine Reclamation (DMR) The reclamation of mining land through The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act. Balancing the regulation of mineral production important to California with protecting the environment. California Geological Survey (CGS) Scientists from DOC gather data on earthquakes and map earthquake faults and related hazards. This information is used to make buildings and structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes, minimizing loss of life and property damage. California Geologic Energy Management (CalGEM) CalGEM prioritizes protecting public health, safety, and the environment in its oversight of the oil, natural gas, and geothermal industries, while working to help California achieve its climate change and clean energy goals. State Mining & Geology Board (SMGB) The board serves as a regulatory, policy and appeals body representing the state's interest in geology, geologic and seismologic hazards, conservation of mineral resources, and reclamation following surface mining activities.

  • “Humboldt County is known for its agricultural heritage, beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity, and this project protects all of these important attributes in perpetuity,” said Jennifer Lucchesi, Director of the Department of Conservation. “Through responsible cattle grazing and sustainable timber practices, this property has been cared for by people committed to land stewardship and ecosystem health that provides many species an environment abundant with resources.” California Natural Resources Agency

PROJECT CLOSED: LONE STAR RANCH ✅ 📍 Humboldt County, CA Thanks to the generosity of nearly 100 supporters and our valued, funding partners, the California Rangeland Trust has successfully conserved the Lone Star Ranch in Humboldt County. For more than a century, the Moore Family has stewarded this land across six generations. With this conservation easement in place, their work to protect and care for the land can continue for generations to come. This project preserves more than just open space—it protects a way of life. In a region impacted by land abandonment and development pressure, the Lone Star Ranch now stands as a model of lasting land stewardship and intergenerational ranching. The conservation of the Lone Star Ranch is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when communities come together to protect California’s working lands. • In Madera County, the La Vina Community Buffer Project is a great example of how land can be repurposed to serve environmental and public health needs—while still supporting agriculture. Funded by the California Department of Conservation’s Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program (MLRP), the project converted 5.27 acres of active almond and walnut orchard into native hedgerows. The new buffer reduces dust and noise, conserves water, and supports pollinator habitat—delivering benefits to both the landowner and the nearby La Vina neighborhood. The idea came from the community itself. After years of advocacy around air pollution concerns, the Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability identified the La Vina neighborhood as a priority. Thanks to long-standing relationships with the landowner and leadership from the Madera County Farm Bureau, a plan was developed that incorporated community input and addressed local needs. In addition to the buffer, Madera County is also developing a walking path that connects La Vina to a nearby shopping area—responding directly to feedback gathered during early outreach. This project is one of many funded by MLRP that demonstrate how voluntary land repurposing can support water sustainability, improve air quality, and create new public benefits.
