Apex is currently supporting Atkinson Construction with environmental compliance oversight on the Washington State Department of Transportation State Route 167 Stage 1b design-build project. This major infrastructure effort includes building a new 2-mile stretch of SR 167 between SR 509 and I-5, along with new interchanges at I-5, 54th Avenue East, and SR 509. It also includes widening existing I-5 bridges and adding new bridges on I-5 and surrounding local roads. A key component of this work is the Riparian Restoration Program (RRP), which plays a critical role in stormwater management, wetland and stream mitigation, and floodplain management associated with Hylebos Creek and its tributaries. The RRP and its Roadside Restoration Areas span 176 acres across Fife, Milton, and sections of the new SR 167 corridor in Tacoma and Pierce County. #ApexCompanies #RiparianRestorationProgram

Apex recently completed a high-visibility project on the campus of a prominent university in Virginia, replacing two aging gravel walkways with durable, low-maintenance porous pavement trails. The new trails, built using Rubberway’s PP3000 system over a stone base, improve safety, appearance, and usability in busy campus areas. These improvements support the university’s goal of establishing a standardized, accessible trail system across campus. Unlike the old gravel paths, which required frequent upkeep and posed trip hazards, the new porous pavement allows for easier navigation with wheeled backpacks and eliminates issues like weeding and stone migration. Porous rubber pavement is a permeable surfacing solution designed to allow rainwater to filter through the surface and into the ground below, helping to reduce stormwater runoff and prevent soil erosion. This environmentally friendly alternative is especially beneficial for sites with heavy pedestrian use where drainage and maintenance are ongoing concerns. These types of trails are ideal for large campuses—including schools, hospitals, and corporate facilities—looking to improve accessibility, reduce maintenance, and support sustainable site development. #ApexCompanies #Virginia #SustainableDevelopment Andrea Heller, CHMM, CESCP Paul Cole
