The Allegheny County Library Association has placed its first book vending machine at the Allegheny County Jail (ACJ) for families visiting the facility. 📚📖 Visiting incarcerated loved ones can be an overwhelming experience, and ACJ anticipates this unique addition to its lobby will positively impact youth visitors. Several titles offered in the vending machine include characters with incarcerated loved ones to help children understand and cope with their own similar situations. Children can receive a free token from jail officers at the front desk and feed the machine to select a book. They can then take the book home to add to their personal collections. This project is in partnership with the Allegheny County Library Association, with funding provided by State Senators Jay Costa and State Senator Lindsey Williams. The first dog in the Teaching Animals and Incarcerated Lifelong Skills (TAILS) program has found her fur-ever home. Ellie (formerly Ethel) joined the women's program unit at the Allegheny County Jail over a month ago and underwent daily training and socializing to prepare to be rehomed. The TAILS program is a partnership initiative with the Allegheny County Jail and Animal Friends to provide training and companionship to shelter dogs while fostering responsibility, purpose, and rehabilitation for incarcerated individuals. With the success of this first adoption, two new dogs recently arrived at the jail. Read more about the TAILS Program and Ellie's journey at https://lnkd.in/eZAWvbsg.
