Maybe This Will Help: How to Feel Better When Things Stay the Same Hardcover – November 23, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Maybe This Will Help is one part the funny and relatable graphs that fans of Am I Overthinking This? and of Michelle Rial know and love, and one part the honest stories behind what makes those graphs so poignant. Michelle Rial brings to light her struggles with chronic pain, grief, and creative uncertainty in a way that reflects the universality of dealing with the unthinkable. Equal parts funny and moving, this book delves into the more serious side of things, finding levity and collective experience in the invisible difficulties that so many of us face. Through humorous charts and intimate peeks into the author's life, it explores the big things that can feel unmanageable and the everyday humor that keeps us moving forward.
SELF-HELP WITH HUMOR: This book brings levity and laughter to serious topics without undermining the important message and relatability that makes it resonate.
BELOVED AUTHOR: Michelle Rial's first book was beloved by her tens of thousands of fans as well as by the media, including Wired, Vulture, Book Riot—and the New Yorker even published her chart-based article on "Book Publishing by the Numbers."
JUST THE RIGHT TONE: This book perfectly captures trying to figure out the "magic pill" that will fix things, struggling to find peace in how things are, and the humor in even the hardest times. It makes an ideal gift for someone struggling with physical or mental pain when you want to help but aren't sure how to.
Perfect for: Fans of Michelle Rial's Instagram and first book, Am I Overthinking This?; people in their 20s and 30s grappling with big life changes or chronic illness

- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021Today, after a long wait caused by supply chain delays, Michelle's book May Be This Will Help was delivered to my home. The waiting was worth it...I love this book for so many good reasons: it is insightful, it is creative, it is humorous, it is moving, it is artful...and so helpful.
Michelle, in her original and unique style, has an incredible talent to address complicated feelings and turn them into brilliant graphics that we can all relate to.
Her book -graphs and prose- deeply personal and thought provoking, invite us to reflect, and offers compassion, hope, and encouragement when dealing with difficulties that so many of us face.
Michelle communicates directly from her world to your own world in such magnificent way that you feel connected...and you feel everything she is conveying...everything she is rendering.
Michelle is my daughter. I congratulate her for this book and the others that have been published. I am so proud of her: for how she is, for what she does, for what she has accomplished, for what moves her.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2022LOVED this book! It is so relatable for so many people. She is so creative in how to presents the information. I especially loved the sections where well meaning friends give you advice on things such as yoga, meditation and eating a certain way- all good things but not necessarily the solution to everything!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2022The book does a great job explaining issues visually that can help others understand what you might be going through. It is a cute book that would make a great gift or collection to your own library.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023I bought this book for the same reason that a lot of people might buy it. I have situations, physical or otherwise, in my life that are unpleasant and not going to change.
I was hoping that this book might not be a cure, but the title suggests that "maybe this will help."
It won't.
The author, Michelle Rial, takes us on a journey of her personal pain from auto-immune issues to the death of a father that she appreciated after he had crossed the rainbow bridge. She journals in the book about the challenges of being in a traditional minority.
There are many colorful pictures and some of them are quite funny. My favorite is the the "no _____" diet Venn diagram, and all the diets share "no friends." Insightful and funny.
This book will tune you into the fact that Michelle Rial is suffering, and some of her suffering might be the same as yours, but at the end of the day, you will just continue to suffer.
I was hoping that somewhere near the end of the book that there would be a pithy statement that would be a great basis for a philosophical approach.
There wasn't.
Now, I feel like I know Michelle Rial better (in the same way that you would if you read a teenager's, personal journal), but I don't feel any better or see any better approaches to dealing with the persistent issues that compelled me to pick up the book.
If you want to learn more about Michelle Rial's personal life then this is a great book.
If you have a real issue that you are wrestling with then this book is unlikely to help you.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2023I bought this book as a cute/helpful coffee table book for my therapy office.
However, my tween begged to keep it and often comes to show me a page or two and how he relates to it (this is HUGE as he has struggled to verbalize what he is feeling in the past).
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2021This was more personal than her last book and better for it. We still got charts about feelings and song lyrics and beanies, interspersed with short essays about her persons life. Highly relatable.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021I Needed to read this today. Thank you for creating this book. Simple and eloquent. The scribble on a napkin to get a message across is totally my style.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2022Super cute book. It's easy to follow for people who prefer to see charts and pictures vs reading 300 pages. I bought it for my daughter who struggles with adhd and anxiety and it was perfect.

Arrived on time. I still haven't finished reading it, but so far it's interesting and is food for thought. Recommend it. It's even a possible birthday or Christmas gift for a family member or friend in need of such a book. I really empathize with the author and her life story. Nice infographics.
