Backcountry ski trip in White Mountains (NH)

January 6, 2008

Place
Pemigewasset Wilderness in White Mountains, New Hampshire

Google map

Time
End of January (26-27th weekend).

Can we do 4 days? Thursday – Sunday or Friday-Monday. If not than 3 days.
Idea is to drive to Hanover day before and drive to the trailhead early next day.

Description
The trip is in isolated area of White Mountains. Several trails in this area were built on place of rail-road tracks, so they are relatively flat, however, there are steep parts too. It could be very cold and windy in the mountains.

Equipment notes

  • Backcountry ski and climbing skins. It is real mountains over there (compared to Adirondacks last year), so climbing skins will be necessary.
  • All cloths: no cotton (even underwear)!, only synthetic or wool.
  • Gaiters
  • Many thick socks
  • Several(!) gloves+mitts. I would say 3 pair, at least one pair should be mitts and not gloves.
  • Camp booties or second pair of boots to change at camp. Booties are not expensive – look for example at Sierra Design or North Face NSE and Nuptse.
  • Good winter sleeping bag (rated to -10 or -20F) or two summer bags. I also suggest two sleeping pads per person

Not required but good to have
  • Snowshoes
  • Balaclava
  • Thermos

Group Equipment that we need and I do not have

Axe
Snow shovel
