    Uhm… was this supposed to prove something? Segregation was still a thing in the US before, during and after WWII. The South kept African-Americans from voting based on spurious legal requirements that didn’t explicitly mention race. Likewise, Gantz couldn’t form a govt. with Joint-List and Yisrael Beiteinu which explicitly wants to remove citizenship from non-Jewish Israelis close to the West Bank. So he split his party to join Netanyahu. The 15 seats of a non-Jewish party didn’t count.

    I agree with Phil: AIPAC is likely using COVID as cover for other, Israel-protecting reasons which we will likely never be able to confirm until some courageous young anti-Zionist working within AIPAC’s offices releases reams of confidential docs a la Edward Snowden.

    There is another possibility however, for AIPAC’s decision to cancel its 2022 conference: Organized Zionism might actually be learning something about how, via its intense and hostile campaigns against Palestine solidarity, BDS, anti-Occupation and anti-Apartheid efforts actually serves those efforts. Every AIPAC conference generates very public and very negative-for-Brand Israel media, publicity, news coverage, press accounts, demonstrations, etc. as a by-product of AIPAC conference coverage. The power of Zionism to generate press attention simultaneously generates coverage and, importantly, legitimization for BDS and Palestine solidarity as a whole. Could it be that after reading the Jewish Electorate Institute’s devastating new poll of Jewish attitudes towards Israel/Zionism coupled with all the other developments that are not going Israel’s way someone with AIPAC suggested that in 2022 they not provide their opponents (again) with a free, annual, Washington-based and slavishly -covered-by-the-MSM event that will without doubt (again) broadcast nationwide terms such as “Occupation”, “Apartheid”, “Sheikh Jarrah”, “Gaza” and “home seizures”?

    This might indicate that Zionism is learning from the (many) mistakes, misreadings and misjudgements it has made relative to attempting to suppress the cherished national American rights to boycott, free associate, condemn (not merely criticize) Israel, Zionism, Congressional sycophancy, etc. Too soon to tell but Zionism has a history of refusing to attend or withdrawing from any event that it feels does not serve its agenda including, infamously, the 2001 World Conference against Racism (WCAR) because it equated Zionism with racism. Zionist don’t, and won’t, stay and defend their principles because they know they are indefensible. Continuous tactical retreat is Zionism’s favorite default gambit.

    The Anglo-American legal system has long allowed temporary discriminatory remedies for historical and systematic abuses. Affirmative Action allows race to be factored into employment and admission decisions.

    Apartheid South Africa and Apartheid Israel discriminate against non-whites and natives, but this discrimination is unlike Affirmative Action because the two apartheid systems give absolute advantage to already advantaged groups.

    So, a survey question which disambiguates “Israel’s just like the US, racism-wise” from “Israel’s racism is of a different sort from that found in the US” would be welcome.

    The report on the survey says that half of the sample (“split A”) were asked if they agree or disagree with the statements
    “Israel doesn’t have the right to exist” and “Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is similar to racism in the U.S.“,
    and if they disagree with either statement, then whether they believe the statement is antisemitic or is not antisemitic. Funny that they didn’t ask people who agreed with a statement whether or not they believed it is antisemitic.

    The question is already confusing enough, asking people whether they agree or disagree with a negative statement (“Israel doesn’t have the right to exist“), and then telling them that if they’re going to indicate a negative reaction to the negative statement, they should say whether they think the statement is antisemitic or not antisemitic.

    The survey found that 34% of respondents agreed that “Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is similar to racism in the U.S.“, 50% disagreed, and 16% weren’t sure. What does that tell us? If you think that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is worse than racism in the U.S., and of a very different kind from racism in the U.S., then the survey taker expects you to say you disagree with the statement.

    There’s a line that hasbarists have been spreading recently, saying that American social justice warriors are adopting the Palestinian cause because they think that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is similar to racism in the U.S. — mistakenly, according to the hasbarists. I’ve even heard this line from conservatives who are not active hasbarists, but they pick it up because they trust the hasbarists. Needless to say, the people who spread it never follow up with details on how Israel’s treatment of Palestinians differs from racism in the U.S., because there’s no way they can win if they go there.

    Apartheid is government segregation of its people by race. The Palestinians who live in the West Bank are not Israel’s people. They are an enemy people in an foreign state. Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians is foreign relations, not apartheid.

    1. In which foreign state (foreign to Israel) is the West Bank located?
    2. Hundreds of thousands of Israeli civilians also live in the West Bank under Israeli civilian law, but the Palestinians there live under Israeli military law. The Israeli government decides where Israeli citizens may live, and where Palestinians may live, and these are separate areas.

    The West Bank Palestinians could have declared independence in 1948. Instead, they asked for union with Jordan so when Jordanians attacked Israel it was also the Palestinians attacking Israel.

    Jack, you’re going off script. The Hasbara line is that the West Bank Palestinians were subjected to invasion and a 19-year occupation by the Jordanian army, during which time they were oppressed by the Jordanians, and those who complain about West Bank Palestinians’ mistreatment under occupation by the Jewish state of Israel are unfair, even antisemitic, because they don’t talk about their mistreatment under occupation by the Arab state of Jordan.

    -be charged with a crime
    -have legal defense
    -have the evidence examined by your defense
    -be judged by a jury of your peers
    -not be tortured

    …none of which are guaranteed to West Bank Palestinians.

    I wish one of the survey’s questions had been written more clearly, specifically the one comparing Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians to US racism.

    I’ve heard apologists of Zionist racism make just this point, meaning that, like the US, Israel has a history that is trying its best to overcome – “Look, is the US free of racism? Of course not, so why pick on Israel? We, too, struggle with becoming more fair to minorities, just as you Americans do. Same thing”.

    Of course, it’s not the same thing at all. While the US assuredly remains a racist society in many ways, our racism is not explicitly codified in our laws, as is the case in Israel. Our leaders, across the political spectrum, have not declared that incorrect ethnicities will never outnumber whites/Christians. Municipalities in the US do not have written codes that exclude Blacks or Jews from buying homes there, no matter how desperately some members of those communities might wish they did.

    I know that racist wishes may be accomplished in under-the-table ways here, but surely national laws and regulations that codify overt racism are a step down the ladder of infamy than implicit racism is, damnable as it may be.

    So, a survey question which disambiguates “Israel’s just like the US, racism-wise” from “Israel’s racism is of a different sort from that found in the US” would be welcome.

    Modern Jews don’t understand this Jewish joke.

    Traditional Jewish yeshiva education education exists on learning a set of acceptable questions and a set of acceptable answers. The real joke lies in awareness that the traditional Jewish community enforces a tremendous uniformity of thought, and there is not much diversity of thought at all.

    Originally religious Jews resisted Zionism as blasphemy, but they have for the most part been enmeshed in Zionism. I spent some time with Satmar Hassidim, but I had to study at Harvard to understand fully what Zionism has done to Judaism and to descendants of Jewish communities.

    I fully believe that Zionism has murdered Judaism as Zionists have committed murderous genocide against Palestinians.

    Maybe Judaism can be revived, but I am not optimistic.

    Oh, I see, BDS portrays “the Jewish state of Israel” as evil. Gotta keep an eye on that campaign. Not only that, but it diminishes the legitimacy, prestige, or authority of Jewish identity. Yikes. Then we get to what is presumably the worst thing about BDS, which is that it seeks “to destroy Jewish peoplehood.” Jewish what? If you accuse BDS of seeking to destroy Jewish people, then that is a charge that can be understood by everyone. But Jewish “peoplehood”?  According to my dictionary, “peoplehood” is “the collective sense of being part of a distinct people.” So we’re told that BDS seeks to destroy the collective Jewish sense of being part of a distinct people. Oh. Maybe this explains why the dispute between the Israelis and the Palestinians is so vicious and bitter, like academic politics: it’s because the stakes are so low.

    In the real world, the Jewish state of Israel demonizes the state of Palestine to such a degree that it won’t allow it to exist (let alone recognize its “right to exist”), and it also delegitimizes Palestinian identity and seeks to destroy Palestinian peoplehood, but those are not the complaints that we hear at pro-Palestinian rallies, because there are real-world grievances such as that half of the Palestinian people are not even allowed to live in Palestine, and most of those who are allowed to live there are subjects under Israeli military rule.

    Liberal Jews have not learnt from history. And it will not turn out well for them. Today, the Left have taken over the streets. No doubt about this. But when the pendulum swings back, and it will, the type of antisemitism that we will see, will be of a different type that is prevalent on the Left today, the type we see in the streets of NY and other cities. And when this happens, the Phillip Weiss’s of the world, who think they will be protected for all those “years” they stood shoulder to shoulder with Palestinians and the Left, that their so called friends will stand with them, will discover that they are also very much alone and in the cross-hairs. And the Weiss’s of the world will have no place to run. If you do not have the backbone to recognize antisemitism in the form of anti-Zionism, then you will deserve what is coming. Phillip, even though your father is Jewish and not your mother, effectively making you not Jewish with the majority of Jews in this world, the antisemitises will not be bothered by this fact.     Human Rights Watch recently concluded that Israel has crossed a threshold and its actions in the occupied territories now meet the legal definition of the crime of apartheid under international law. Israel is the sole sovereign power that operates in this land, and it systematically discriminates on the basis of nationality and ethnicity. Such a reality is, as we saw ourselves, apartheid. It is time for the world to recognize that what we saw in South Africa decades ago is happening in the occupied Palestinian territories too.

    Since Misterioso likes to cite Henry Morgenthau Sr. a Jewish critic of Zionism, I would like to add some information on the next generation of the Morgenthau family. Henry Morgenthau Jr. (1891-1967)served as FDR’s Treasury Secretary from 1934 to 1945 . Initially he, too, was an opponent of Zionism but under the impact of the Holocaust his attitude changed: he was instrumental in creating the War Refugee Board, went on to work for the UJA and became a strong supporter of Israel. There’s even a moshav named for him here (Tal Shahar, about halfway between Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva).
    Morgenthau Sr.’s granddaughter was the historian Barbara Tuchman (1912-1989) , who wrote” Bible and sword : England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour” ( among other works) .
    Back to Morgenthau Sr. : it’s recently come to my attention that despite his ideological opposition to Zionism, Ambassador Morgenthau was instrumental in providing aid to the Jewish Yishuv during WW1.

    I have already seen Green parrot this propaganda script once before.

    Meshoe sets up a straw man so that he can argue that the Zionist state does not practice SA Apartheid in the region the Zionist state rules (all of Mandatory Palestine).

    1) The argument is not relevant because Apartheid is defined by Rome Statute and not by the Apartheid SA example.

    2) Apartheid SA stratified the non-white resident population into strata with varying degrees of rights from non-citizen blacks, who had no rights, to citizen Japanese, who had full white status and white rights. The Apartheid SA system was similar to that of the Zionist state but not as harsh.

    During the apartheid period, a citizen non-white could theoretically serve in practically any government office.

    No one took seriously the racist SA argument that SA had no obligation to give Black non-citizens rights because Black non-citizens were citizens of bantustans, which were fake sovereigns just like the PA.

    One must suspect that Meshoe is on a Zionist propaganda payroll.

    And yes, it’s projection. Israeli Jews blame Palestinians for wanting to do to them what they are actually doing to the Palestinians. Maybe they’d like to reciprocate in kind. Maybe not. (Could you blame them?) But it’s the Jews who are actually doing it.
