I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be joining the ’s San Francisco team in January. Deciding to leave the BBC - after 10 years! - has been the most difficult decision of my career, but I could not be more excited to become part of ’s formidable squad.

It's *way* too easy for anyone to get a US .gov domain. Some very serious implications here. Also, relatively few cities -- even large ones -- have obtained their own .gov domains, leaving the door open to election shenanigans, among other things

I dove into the popularity of e-book lending at libraries and learned all kinds of fun tidbits, which I will now share.

Mom is alive but isn’t online these days and wouldn’t be able to verify. I could probably hack into her gmail which I should’ve done years ago. Her one tweet is a gem.

I think I've said this before, but San Francisco when it's raining is worse than London in snow. What a disaster.

Also worth considering: "inactive" also includes things such as , an archive of Obama's tweets while in office. Whoever maintains that account (Obama Pres Library, according to bio) will need to log-in and verify. Can't just leave it there.

There are very good reasons to remove inactive accounts, of course. It will mean people can't inflate their follower counts with armies of duds. Also, inactive accounts more prone to hacking, as the real owners don't notice.

My take on this - based on casual hunches, hence why not reported specifically - is that Twitter didn't quite consider the issue of dead users and will come up with something before the deadline. Suggested to their team it was a classic case of engineers thinking like engineers.

My mum set up an account to DM me on my birthday one year, and I don't even remember what the account name was to find it. I'll never see that tweet again now.

Twitter only offers complete deactivation of users who have died. No way for loved ones to memorialise a dead person's account, or stop someone pinching their username once Twitter carries out the cull.
