Parliamentary elections are the opposite of referendums. You vote for party/candidates with a range of evolving policies on various issues.

I support Kurdish independence from Iraq. I think the referendum was a bad way of trying to achieve it.

Referendums are bad. That doesn't mean the Spanish police are doing the right thing (or that the Kurds don't deserve a state. They do!)

Exactly. And ultimately it undermines parliamentary democracy which for all its many faults, is still the best system humans ever invented.
