7 Tips and Tricks for the #GalaxyS7 and #GalaxyS7edge

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have a host of new features that were designed to make the user experience more seamless than ever. Check out 7 tips and tricks to help you master your Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Lock Screen Customizable App Shortcuts

Place two apps in the lower corners of your Galaxy S7 and S7 edge lock screen for easy and quick access. Create shortcuts for the camera, photo gallery, S Health or other third-party apps.

How to set up: Settings > Lock screen and security > Info and app shortcuts > App shortcuts

More Ways to Manage Apps from Home Screen

Move Apps is a temporary container for managing several applications at once. To move app icons to different home screens, long press an icon, then drag it to the Move Apps icon on the upper right. When you are ready, tap or drag to move them to another page. In addition, look for an app by name in the app tray by selecting “Search” at the top of the screen.

Show All Apps on Home Screen

Show all of your installed apps on your home screen. Simply select “Show all apps on home screen” to get rid of the app tray, and move all the apps to the Home screens.

How to Set Up: Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy Labs

Display Scaling

Display scaling optimizes the DPI (Dots Per Inch) settings of the display. Choose Standard or change to Condensed. Condensing the display lets you view more content on the screen at one time with smaller icons, controls, and text.

How to Set Up: Settings > Display > Display scaling

Icon Backgrounds

For the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the look of the icons has been updated to be more unified and natural. For native apps, the icons all come in a “squircle” shape (a square with rounded edges) to achieve a pleasing and organized appearance. For third-party apps, turn on the Icon background, which creates a squircle container background for all those icons. Many icons now offer two different styles— a traditional flat look, and a more 3D look.

How to Set Up: Settings > Display > Icon backgrounds

Cross App

Use apps from within certain other apps with Cross App. For example, while chatting with a friend in the Messages app, share photos and videos or open a URL without having to close the app.

When using the Messages app, just click on the paperclip icon on the left of the Enter message panel. Three options will appear: Camera, Gallery or Other. Camera lets you take photos or record video and send it directly to the person you are chatting with. Gallery lets you select photos and videos saved on your device, and Other offers a range of apps, including Audio, Voice recorder, Memo and more.

Quick Dial

Quick Dial makes calling your contacts faster and easier. Once enabled, give the home key a long press (even if the display is off), and then speak the name of the person you want to call. Quick Dial takes care of the rest. Machine learning enables your device to become more familiar with your voice over time.

How to Set Up: Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy Labs > Quick Dial

Introducing a new design and better workout experience with #GearFit2

The Samsung Gear Fit was the industry’s first wearable device with a curved Super AMOLED display. The Gear Fit2 comes with improvements to its display to better fit your wrist — and improve your fitness experience.

Above the Curve

One of the improvements of the new device is its design. The curvature of the curved Super AMOLED display applied on the Gear Fit2 is 47.65R, while that of the previous model was 57.45R. The “R” is the measure of how curved a curve really is; a smaller number indicates a bigger curve. By decreasing the curvature, you get a more compact and slim design for comfortable everyday use.

“Production processes, such as the lamination of the panel and window, become more complex when the curvature of a flexible display is smaller,” explained Gyubong Jung, Principal Engineer of Samsung Display. “But we were able to overcome this challenge through continuous research and development in flexible display technology,” says Jung.

Crisp and Clear

The Curved Super AMOLED display of the Gear Fit2 also boasts a screen that is clear and sharp, indoors and out.

The size of the screen of the Gear Fit2 was reduced to 1.5 inches from the previous 1.8 inches, but the resolution was enhanced to 216 × 432 pixels from 128 × 432 pixels. A clearer image quality was accomplished by improving the pixels per inch to 311ppi from 245ppi. Additionally, the maximum luminance of the display, a factor that strongly influences the level of display visibility under bright natural light, has been enhanced by 50 percent.

These enhancements were achieved by applying the same organic material used in the latest Samsung flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, to the display of the Gear Fit2. As a result, fitness-related information such as heart rate, workout time and calories burned can be quickly and conveniently checked while exercising in bright daylight.

Thinner and Lighter

Since AMOLED displays do not require color filters or a backlight to illuminate the screen, the devices that utilize this technology can be thinner and lighter.

Flexible AMOLED displays in particular, like the one utilized by the Gear Fit2, can achieve pixels on a polyimide (PI) board made of a plastic material similar to thin cellophane. Thus, they can significantly reduce the weight and thickness of the product compared to ordinary AMOLED displays that use glass boards.

The Gear Fit2’s curved Super AMOLED panel itself is only 0.12mm thick. Even when assembled with the device’s other components, such as its Polaroid film, driver integrated circuit(IC) and window, it is still only 1.6mm thick and weighs 3.4g—a weight even lighter than a sheet of A4 paper.

#Gear360: Out of this world design inspired by astronauts

The Gear 360 is Samsung’s first 360-degree camera. It allows users to preserve their memories in a whole new way. The device has also been catching consumers’ attention with its unique and aesthetically-pleasing design.

We sat down with Principal Designer Minki Ham, Senior Designer Kyunghan Noh and Assistant Designer Woojung Moon to discuss the insights and inspiration that informed the Gear 360’s eye-catching design.

Q. Where did you find inspiration for the Gear 360?

Noh: It was inspired by the helmets astronauts wear in space. These helmets look sleek, seamless and minimal, but also feature very sturdy inner structures. The idea of providing 360-degree images also played a major part. Unlike regular cameras, the Gear 360 captures images in a 360-degree field of view. The images it captures are spherical, so it made sense to create a globe-shaped camera that offers a consistent viewing experience from any angle.

Q. What kind of challenges did you need to overcome for this project?

Noh: In terms of design, our top priority was to make this new-type camera appeal to customers. We needed the Gear 360 to have a whole new product look, one that set it apart from existing devices. The challenge for us was to enable it to create images that were totally different, but to do so without losing the essential elements of a 360-degree camera.

The LCD display on the top of the device was actually not an original feature of the design plan. At first we thought that the menu, functions and other information could be displayed on a smartphone screen, as users need to pair it with a smartphone in order to view and share content. However, we later realized that to do so might not result in a truly intuitive design. We wanted to make it intuitively clear to users as they first set eyes on the camera which buttons they needed to press to start recording or change the recording mode. That is why we ended up adding a display to the finished device.

Moon: As the Gear 360 is spherical, users don’t need to think about where the front or the back of the device is. But as this design was somewhat new for many customers, people would often ask us questions like, “Where am I supposed to look when I’m taking a selfie?” or “What angle should I be looking at the display from?” We also had to decide where to put the display and control buttons, as a spherical camera does not have a front, so to speak.

Q. How and why did you choose the colors and materials for the Gear 360?

Moon: We thought that as users might want to get more out of it by using it in conjunction with the Gear VR, it would be better to use the same white and black color scheme for consistency. In terms of materials, we used optimal solutions that would prevent overheating and also help increase the device’s portability. Unlike the Gear VR, though, the Gear 360 is suitable for outdoor use as well. Therefore, we went with materials that are resistant to contaminants and applied a non-slip coating to the accessories for outdoor usage.
