ICJ Condems Murder of Ugandan Human Rights Defender David Kato

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) today deplored the violent killing yesterday of David Kato, a Ugandan human rights defender and LGBT activist. The ICJ called on the Ugandan authorities to take immediate steps to investigate the crime and to bring those responsible to justice in a fair trial.

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is honoured to announce the election of Professor Pedro Nikken as ICJ President. Pedro Nikken who has been a member of the Commission for a number of years, was elected ICJ President on 21 January 2011. He succeeds Mary Robinson who served in the role from 2008 - 2010.

KENYAN GOVERNMENT BOWS TO LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE AS IGAD SUMMIT IS MOVED FROM NAIROBI TO ADDIS ABABA

The Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (Igad) summit scheduled for 30th October, 2010 has been moved from Nairobi to Addis in a last minute move as a result of pressure from civil society and the ICC on the Kenyan Government.

The Summit is expected to host Sudanese President Al Bashir who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for three counts of genocide, five counts of crimes against humanity and two counts of war crimes.

Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued two decisions informing the Security Council of the United Nations and the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute about Omar Al Bashir’s visits to the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Chad, “in order for them to take any measure they may deem appropriate”.

Death Sentence no longer automatic for Kenyan murder convicts

In a landmark judgment in the case of Godfrey Ngotho Mutiso v R the Court of Appeal of Kenya on Friday (30th July) declared that the application of a mandatory death sentence on all prisoners convicted of murder unconstitutional.

This means that the death sentence is not automatic to all suspects convicted of murder and the judge shall have discretion to vary the sentences after the convicted person asks for mitigation.
