The Judiciary demands justice from Kenyans, says Chief Justice Willy Mutunga

Written by ICJ Kenya on .

Dr Willy MutungaRecently the Judiciary, and particularly the Supreme Court, has been the target of attacks from Kenyans. We have been the target of attacks, slander, libel, and outright indecent, vulgar, and unacceptable abuses (Tanzanians term such abuses MATUSI YA NGUONI). Indeed, today a Kenyan gleefully tweeted that s/he wishes I had died instead of the late Mutula Kilonzo. We are human beings and we hurt, too. We have families that are hurting because of these attacks.

Nairobi, Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, have been urged to ensure full cooperation with the International Criminal Court by the Human Rights Watch.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, same day the two were sworn in as President and Deputy they said their new government should also uphold and protect the bill of rights in Kenya’s constitution.

“Kenyatta and Ruto should be held to their promises to attend their trials before the ICC,” said Elizabeth Evenson, senior international justice counsel at Human Rights Watch. “As president of an ICC member country, Kenyatta should also ensure that his government provides the cooperation it owes the ICC and the support it needs. Victims of Kenya’s post-election violence and their families have already waited more than five years for justice.”
