Sumitomo Makes Takeover Bid for Axcelis

Sumitomo Heavy Industries (Tokyo) unveiled a takeover bid, valued at $544M, for ion implant vendor Axcelis Technologies Inc. (Beverly, Mass.). The two companies are partners in an ion implant joint venture in Japan named SEN, but have a recent history of conflicting product introductions and royalty disputes.

    Fremont, Calif.-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier Lam Research Corp announced that based on preliminary results, its cash tender offer for all publicly held registered shares of SEZ Group has successfully met the condition that more than 66 2/3% of SEZ shares be tendered.
