Updates

  • From tax reforms and FDA deregulations to import tariffs and wage policy changes, several new developments are shaping the future of the food and beverage industry. Here’s what you need to know. 🟣 Changes to Tax Legislation Affect Restaurant Payroll and Reporting Effective January 1, 2025, the new tax legislation introduces deductions for qualified tips and overtime (up to $25,000 per employee, with phase-outs for higher earners). Additionally, the Form 1099 threshold for non-employees will rise from $600 to $2,000 in 2026—reducing administrative burdens. These updates call for strategic planning and adjustments to payroll systems. 🟧 FDA Deregulates 52 Food Standards The FDA has officially removed 52 food standards, calling them “obsolete and unnecessary.” While the agency says this promotes efficiency and healthier options, critics warn it opens the door to ingredient changes and lower-quality products without clear labeling. 🟣 U.S. Places Tariff on Mexican Tomatoes As of July 14th, a 17% duty has been placed on most fresh Mexican tomatoes. Though intended to protect U.S. tomato farmers, 70% of the nation’s tomatoes are imported from Mexico—raising fears of price hikes. Mexico’s Economic Secretary is currently challenging the tariff. 🟧 D.C. Council Passes Tipped Wage Compromise In a heated move, the D.C. Council approved a compromise on Initiative 82, sparking protests and a chamber lockdown. The amendment will cap the tipped wage at 75% of the regular minimum wage by 2034, rather than fully eliminating the tip credit by 2027 as originally planned.
