Non-profit Organizations

A UK charity that enables disabled children and adults to live with greater independence.

About us

Designability is a national charity that enables disabled people to live with greater independence and choice. Our expertise is in user-centred design, creating products with and for disabled people to improve and enrich their lives. The common thread through all of our work is in the design, creation and provision of a product to increase independence for disabled people. This is not just about products people need, but products they want to use. Although other avenues may provide necessary products, they are not always easy to use or products people would choose to have. We deliver choice by involving disabled people across our organisation and throughout the design process to create innovative product solutions not available elsewhere. We create great looking, easy-to-use products that go beyond basic functionality. And we partner with industry to help as many people as we can – we’ve transformed over 300,000 lives to date. As a charity, our mission is get the right products into the hands of those who need them. We build prototypes and develop new products in response to specific needs, in the hope that our products will inspire new markets to blossom. We do not receive any statutory funding, so all of our work relies on voluntary donations. We are proud to be a Disability Confident employer and be one of thousands of organisations who are ensuring that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations. • Our Summer Appeal ends in 24 hours so please donate today to support children like Delilah: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx With the support of people like you, over 1,500 children like Delilah have benefitted from Wizzybugs. But there are many more people waiting for our support. Four-year-old Delilah has cerebral palsy and is unable to move independently, so playing used to mean watching as her brothers and sisters ran around her. But at Designability, we provide Wizzybug powered wheelchairs, free, to any young disabled child, like Delilah, which gives them the chance to play more easily and the independence to explore their world. Delilah’s mum, Vikki, said: “She's extra smiley now. She can do things for herself, and it’s given her confidence. She loves to chase after her siblings and get involved in play. It's unreal.” There are still children waiting for a Wizzybug of their own. You could change the lives of a family this summer, giving them the opportunity to spend their holidays in play.

    • Delilah in her Wizzybug powered wheelchair with her older sister beside her in the park with text overlay ’24 hours left to give! It’s not too late to change the lives of children like Delilah this summer’
  • FREE fun, powered wheelchairs for children aged 14 months and over 🙌   Powered wheelchairs are expensive. But, if you live in the UK and your son or daughter is 14 months and up, you can apply for one for free (yes, really)!   We fundraise to provide fun Wizzybug powered wheelchairs to children who need them. Families can keep them for as long as they need them and then they come back to be refurbished for another child to use.   You can find out more and apply for a free Wizzybug on our website: https://lnkd.in/ekAa3qe4 **Please share this post to help us spread the word! #Disability #Wheelchair #OccupationalTherapy

  • 92% of parents say their disabled children do not have the same opportunities to be included as their non-disabled peers.  If you donate to our Summer Appeal today, you could help to change that: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx Four-year-old Delilah is unable to move independently, so playing used to mean watching as her brothers and sisters ran around her. But at Designability, we provide Wizzybug powered wheelchairs, free, to any young disabled child, like Delilah, which gives them the chance to play more easily and the independence to explore their world. Now she’s able to whizz, twirl, chase and play as she chooses. “She's extra smiley now,” Vikki said. “She can do things for herself and it’s given her confidence. She loves to chase after her siblings and get involved in play. It's unreal. “Wizzybug makes life easier among all the struggles.” [Video description: First you see a shot of Delilah in a big swing with her older sister, with Wizzybug in the foreground, the text reads: ‘Delilah got her first powered wheelchair and now her life looks like this…’ Next is a quick montage of joyful moments of Delilah playing in her Wizzybug, followed by a final frame of her smiling at the camera with text: ‘Please donate to support more children like Delilah (See caption)] *Music: Funny day, Ilya Truhanov

  • Do we think April is better at doing donuts than Lewis Hamilton? 🏎️ In her mum’s words: “We honestly cannot thank the team enough for being able to give April this amazing opportunity to embrace independence, fun and freedom for the first time. “The Wizzybug has made such a difference to her life in such a short space of time and it has also made a massive difference to the family. “We can go out and feel like we aren’t holding her back and she isn’t restricted anymore. Her two brothers think it’s great that she can now race around with them.” Thank you to all of our supporters who continue to make these special moments for children like April❤️ [Video description: April is cruising along the promenade in her Wizzybug powered wheelchair, customized with some amazing Disney-themed stickers. She drives over to a statue and points up at it. Next you see her doing speedy donuts in it, as her brothers ride around her and a passer-by smiles at the sight.] *Music: Folk Bed, music by audioautix.com #Disability #WheelchairUser #Childhood #CharitySupport

  • Wizzybug can fit inside small cars! 🚗 You might be wondering: Is Wizzybug heavy? Will it fit in my car? Our Wizzybug powered wheelchairs are quite heavy, but we will show you how to take it apart so that one person can easily lift it in pieces to take out and about. In terms of fitting it in your car - we have tried and tested proof that it can squeeze into the boot of a Toyota Yaris (pictured - other popular small cars are available!) Our technicians are great at playing car Tetris and finding a way to make it fit, even if it requires a little dismantling. We hope that reassures anyone who might have been put off applying because they were unsure about the size and weight of our wonderful Wizzybugs. https://lnkd.in/ekAa3qe4

    • Picture of an open boot on a Toyota Yaris with a Wizzybug powered wheelchair stowed inside. A photoshopped numberplate reading ‘Wizzybug’ has been added to turn it into a Wizzy-mobile and there is text overlay that reads: Don’t worry – even small cars can transport Wizzybugs!
  • Here’s another look behind the scenes at Designability, a UK charity. For those of you who are new here, we use person-centred design to create products and services with and for disabled people. Our vision is a future where disabled people live the life they choose. 1. Arriving into work 2. A parent tries out our accessible pushchair in the sunshine 3. A Wizzybug gets set-up and tested ready for a handover appointment 4. Setting up the test rig for our Accessible Vehicle Design (AVD) project: demonstrating the customisable seatbelt 5. Adjusting the dashboard and steering wheel simulator 6. Adding on the ‘door’ with extra options for control placements 7. Trying out the control panel switches on the steering wheel 8. Setting-up at Kidz to Adultz Wales & West to promote our loan scheme 9. A child gets fitted for his Wizzybug in Northern Ireland 10. • What did you get up to this weekend? We hope it included making fun memories with your family. We wanted to ask if you could support even more disabled children like Delilah to enjoy the same fun and playtime this summer: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx Since having her Wizzybug, Delilah no longer has to watch her siblings from the sidelines and can move around and get involved with playing hide and seek, chase and having lots of fun in the park. “Donating to Designability is something you can do to make a massive difference”, Vikki (Delilah’s mum) said. “People like you can make a child happy.” #Disability #CharitySupport #Childhood

    • Summer Appeal: you can change the lives of more children like Delilah by donating today.
    • Delilah poses with three of her siblings under a beautiful blossom tree. Delilah is using a Wizzybug powered wheelchair. The caption reads ‘playtime is possible for disabled kids if they have the right equipment’.
    • Delilah squeals with delight in her Wizzybug as her sister holds her hand and her brother and mum follow behind. The caption reads ‘Since having her free Wizzybug, Delilah can move around and join in with her siblings as she chooses.’
  • Wizzybug’s favourite food? Donuts! 🍩 This was Finnick’s first trip to the park with his new Wizzybug and let’s just say he was enjoying taking it for a SPIN! Donuts are the first move that many children make with their Wizzybug and we can’t imagine how fun it must feel for them to control twirling themselves round and around at speed! Have a great weekend, everyone. [Video description: You see a montage of clips of Finnick trying out his Wizzybug powered wheelchair at the park. Now and again he glances at the camera and smiles. You also see him being spun around on an accessible roundabout and gazing out at the water.] *Music: Music Cocktails, Alex Guz #Disability #Wheelchair #Childhood

  • We believe in the importance of play. That’s why we’re asking you to please donate to our Summer Appeal today and support more disabled children to play freely: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx 92% of parents say their disabled children do not have the same opportunities to be included as their non-disabled peers.  We don’t think that’s OK. Having access to something like a Wizzybug powered wheelchair free of charge from Designability opens up opportunities to young kids so that they can chase, spin and get up to mischief. With your support, we’ve already helped over 1,500 disabled children to play with their friends and siblings as they choose. Can you help us to support even more disabled people across the UK? https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx [Video description: A montage of videos of children using their Wizzybug powered wheelchair to chase a ball in the street, wheel along beside another child in the park, racing a sibling side by side in a museum and driving up towards the camera and smiling in the park.] *Solo Acoustic 3, music by audioautix.com #Disability #Childhood #ThePowerOfPlay

  • Support our Summer Appeal today and more children could be enjoying a whole summer of play: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx We all know the value of playtime for kids, whether it’s hanging out in the park, having fun on the swings, blowing bubbles, playing tag or hitting a ball around. But many children, like Delilah, used to be unable to join in with her siblings, because she didn’t have a way to play with them without help. Since she’s had a free Wizzybug from us, she’s been able to chase, twirl and keep up with her brothers and sisters. Please donate to our Summer Appeal and give people the opportunity to spend their holidays in play: https://lnkd.in/dXa9ZKFx #TheWayIPlay

    • A picture of Delilah looking really happy in her Wizzybug powered wheelchair while holding a branch she’s got from a nearby tree in the park. Underneath is a photo of her on a big swing with her sister beside a picture of her playing ball with her brother. Text reads: Donate today and more children like Delilah could be enjoying a summer of play.
