Who makes the cell in that BESS product you're about to buy?📦 🔋 🤔 The Li-ion cell is the heart of a battery energy storage system - it is where the chemical reaction takes place to store and release energy. Large projects have hundreds of thousands, or even over a million cells! If the cells in a BESS behave well, so do systems - but if cells malfunction or fail, systems often follow. Some integrators of BESS products make their own cells (CATL, BYD, EVE, and REPT to name a few) while others buy from other suppliers (Tesla, Powin, Fluence, and Sungrow, to name a few). To make it more confusing, there are many cell OEMs who supply many integrators, and integrators who have various different cell suppliers! 🖇️ Yet, when you look on the data sheet for most BESS products, you may notice something odd - you will almost NEVER see the cell model or manufacturer. If you have the nerve to ask your BESS salesperson, "what cell is in your product?" they may react as if you had asked them what color socks they are wearing. Sure, we could tell you, but why do you want to know? 🧦 This dynamic is due to a few factors: 1. The cell is where most the IP is. Cell OEMs are frequently coming out with new models, and often times are marketing products with cells that are just coming out of R&D, and hence they are reticent to advertise their secret sauce🤐 2. As mentioned above, many cell manufacturers are ALSO integrators; their cells, sometimes the same models, go into both theirs AND their competitors' enclosures; hence the reticence (especially on behalf of the integrators using third-party cell OEMs)🕵♀️ 3. Nearly all utility-scale products offer a warranty (usually in the battery supply agreement) and a performance guarantee (usually in the LTSA). These agreements guarantee levels of degradation and RTE that are often back-to-back with the cell terms. So if the BESS integrator guarantees their product's performance, they may say: I'm giving you a commercial guarantee, and how I am able to offer it is not your concern📜 The graphic shows public announcements of supply agreements between major integrators and cell-makers. Note that we have shown the most current publicly available cell supplier used by each vendor, but many integrators have confidential cell supply offerings which are only disclosed later in the sales process.
