🌱 Leadership lessons don’t always come from the office sometimes they unfold in a small holiday apartment, surrounded by family and the unexpected. Maiken Ege Nilsen, our Country Manager for Norway, recently shared a personal story that reminded us how much real life can mirror the values we hold at Applica. What started as a holiday in Mallorca turned into an unplanned extra week abroad, when her son was declared unfit to fly due to an ear infection. Instead of stress, what followed was teamwork, laughter, empathy, and growth from her children and herself. 💬 "You should thank me for giving us an extra week of vacation," her son joked and he wasn’t wrong. At Applica, we talk a lot about empathy, resilience, initiative, and relationships not just as company values, but as qualities that make us better people and better partners in work and life. ✨ Sometimes, those values show up most clearly when things don’t go to plan. 🌱 Some leadership lessons don’t happen at work – they unfold in a tiny holiday apartment, with three kids asking what’s next. 🏝️ We had just finished a magical family holiday in Mallorca – me, my partner, and our set of three children each. ✈️ By the day of departure, my 11-year-old son had developed an acute ear infection and the doctor declared him not fit to fly. Everyone else had to travel home, and I stayed behind with my kids (13, 11, and 7), trying to manage medication, pain relief, doctors, insurance, accommodation – and children’s expectations. 🤯 What I thought would be stressful turned into something unexpectedly powerful. 🤝 We became a team. 😂 We laughed, we problem-solved, we grew closer. 💛 My children showed incredible empathy, courage, and resilience. 💪🏻 And I surprised myself with how calm and confident I could be – even when I was stretched thin. 👦🏼 My son even said: “You should thank me for giving us an extra week of vacation.” And he was right. 🔍 When I reflect on what we experienced, I see so many of the same values we believe in at Applica: Determination. Contribution. Empathy. Authenticity. Relationships. Initiative. Confidence. Just back from a wonderful family holiday in Southern Spain—soaking up the sunshine, good food, even better company, and a rare chance to truly switch off. ☀️🍷👨👩👧👦 What struck me most was how important rest really is. Taking a proper break gave me time to reset and return with more clarity and energy than I’ve had in months. In leadership, we often talk about resilience, decision-making, and leading by example. But we don’t talk enough about rest. The kind that refuels you mentally and emotionally—not just physically. You can’t pour from an empty cup. I read something on here recently about how we tend to treat our own health and energy like fuel in a tank. We often wait until we’re running low before refuelling—but keeping a full (or even half-full) tank gives us margin. During my time away these past two weeks, this really resonated with me. We need margin to handle the unexpected challenges, stay resilient, and avoid breakdowns. And it doesn’t cost that much more to maintain good fuel levels. Preventative habits, like sleep, movement, laughter, and real rest, aren’t indulgences. They’re maintenance. I’m hugely grateful for Applica, where we’ve created an environment that encourages and thrives on hard work, but values time out and understands that rest isn’t time wasted. It’s an investment in showing up at our best.
