Chapter 1
A beginning written in trust
Marty entered the world on May 5, 2020. Just a few weeks later, in June 2020, he arrived in Steve and Rehana's home as a tiny, half-feathered chick, helpless and hungry. Named after Marty Byrde from their favorite show, Ozark, this little bird seemed destined for his own kind of audacious adventure.
Those first weeks unfolded in a tender choreography of teaspoons and trust. Steve and Rehana carefully fed him baby bird food, watching as he opened his beak with perfect faith that nourishment would come. He learned to walk with surprising confidence, to nestle into a soft blanket for afternoon naps, and to find peace in his cage at night. But even then, the signs were clear: Marty would never be content with an ordinary bird's life.
He accompanied his humans everywhere — to friends' houses, to the family cottage, exploring a world that most pet birds would never know. He was learning something fundamental: home wasn't a place. Home was wherever Steve and Rehana were.
Chapter 2
A bird who refused to be ordinary
What made Marty exceptional wasn't just his intelligence or beauty — it was his absolute refusal to accept the limitations of being a bird. Where others of his species might be skittish or aloof, Marty was boldly, irrepressibly social.
He shared every meal at the table with his humans, savouring everything from ground beef to oatmeal, pizza to peanut butter, even sipping tea alongside them. He rode in the car with the ease of a seasoned traveler and accompanied Steve and Rehana on walks through the neighborhood — no leash, no hesitation, just pure trust. He bathed in the fountain on the back deck and perched contentedly in the Japanese Maple or hedge outside, secure in the knowledge that he belonged with them.
The neighbourhood came to know him well. Marty would test his wings, flying to nearby yards while Steve and Rehana called out to him. Neighbours would respond with amused shouts: "Marty's here!" Curious about other birds, he'd sometimes wing his way to a distant tree, sit companionably with the wild birds for a moment, then fly back to his humans — always back to his humans. Even longtime bird experts were astonished by his willingness to be handled and his complete lack of fear.
But perhaps nothing captured Marty's personality quite like the incident with the pizza delivery person. Hearing the knock, Marty launched himself toward the door and landed squarely on the stranger's shoulder — his favorite way of saying hello. After Steve and Rehana paid the bill, Marty decided the visit wasn't over. He followed the delivery person to their car and settled himself on the roof, refusing every entreaty to come down.
The bewildered driver stood by the car, pleading with Steve and Rehana to rescue them from their feathered hijacker. The standoff lasted far longer than anyone expected, a perfect demonstration of Marty's iron will wrapped in colourful feathers.
Chapter 3
The rhythm of a shared life
Every day with Marty was a small celebration. Music transformed him into a dancing blur of colour, bopping with irresistible joy. The cord for the blinds became his favorite swing, where he'd perform acrobatic routines with the confidence of a tiny trapeze artist.
He was Steve's shower companion and Rehana's kitchen assistant — an enthusiastic, if somewhat unconventional, sous chef. Meals were always a family affair, where the three of them would gather together, Marty often perching affectionately around his humans' necks, soaking in the warmth of their presence. Evenings followed a cherished ritual: snuggling close while the television played, then retiring to the guest bathroom after his goodnight kiss.
When the grandchildren visited, Marty's joy multiplied. He adored sharing Taine's breakfasts — eggs, bacon, toast, even hot chocolate — and would claim his favorite perch atop Taine's head during TV time. With Aven, Steve and Rehana's granddaughter, he had a special bond. Whenever her voice rang out from the speakerphone, Marty would fly to it immediately, perching on the device and searching the room for her, unable to comprehend why she wasn't there. When she visited in person, his favourite game was hiding in her curly hair and gently tugging at her earrings.
Chapter 4
A hierarchy all his own
Marty's love had its own pecking order, and he made it clear to everyone. Steve was his chosen person, his North Star, the centre of his universe. Rehana came next, lovingly adopted as his second favourite. But Steve's son Brett? Brett occupied a different category entirely. With playful but determined aggression, Marty would launch himself at Brett in mock attacks — nothing dangerous, but certainly memorable. It was Marty's way of establishing the household hierarchy, one "assault" at a time. Some visitors, already fearful of birds, found themselves even more startled by Marty's enthusiastic door greetings.
With the run of the house, Marty seemed to possess an uncanny awareness of his humans' routines. When Steve and Rehana prepared to leave, he'd make himself as difficult to dislodge as possible, clinging to them with stubborn determination. And whenever Steve stepped outside without him, Marty could be found at the front window, marching back and forth like a tiny, feathered sentry, waiting impatiently for his return.
Chapter 5
A love beyond measure
In the end, Marty was more than the sum of his antics and affections. He was proof that love transcends species, that family is built not on biology but on bonds freely chosen and fiercely maintained. He was a four-ounce reminder that joy often comes in the smallest packages, and that the courage to live fully — to trust completely and love without reservation — is the greatest gift any creature can offer.
Marty brought immeasurable joy to Steve and Rehana's lives. He was loved deeply, completely, and forever.
And in the quiet moments when the house feels too still, when the cord for the blinds hangs motionless and the fountain on the deck splashes alone, they remember the tiny dancer who filled their home with music, their hearts with wonder and their lives with a love that will never fade.
