The New York Yankees are moving on from one of their relief pitchers.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Yankees have traded reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates. BeisbolFR.com's Francys Romero reported shortly after that the Pirates are sending catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz to the Yankees in the deal.
Doval had been creating chatter in the rumor mill as a trade candidate with the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline almost here. Now, he has found his new home with the Pirates and will be looking to make an impact in their bullpen.
It is certainly fair to argue that Doval was in need of a fresh start before this trade. After being dealt to the Yankees last season by the San Francisco Giants, the 6-foot-2 righty struggled throughout his time in New York.
In 22 appearances last season with the Yankees following being acquired from the Giants, Doval had a 0-1 record and a 4.82 ERA. In 44 games with New York this season before being traded to Pittsburgh, he had a 4.54 ERA in 44 games. Now, after being dealt to the Pirates, he will be looking to get things back on track.
Doval is under team control through next season, so he has the potential to be more than a rental for the Pirates.This likely added to his appeal for the Pirates.
It will be interesting to see if Doval can regain his previous All-Star form with the Pirates. In 341 career MLB games over six seasons, he has a 29-20 record, a 3.53 ERA, 109 saves, and 393 strikeouts.
