A man in his 50s has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Castletownbere Pier in West Cork.
Shortly after 5.30pm, Valentia Coastguard was alerted to a report by the National Ambulance Service that a man was in the water at the pier.
The local coastguard, along with the RNLI's all-weather lifeboat were dispatched to the scene.
The man was taken from the water in an unresponsive state and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gardaí said the man's body has been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.
A file will also be prepared for the coroner
Deputy Mayor of the county of Cork Finbarr Harrington said the local community is "shocked" by the news.
"It's shocking, there is real sadness for the man and his family. People are shocked.
"Usually you associate tragedies at sea with bad weather - storms and rough seas - but not in this case.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the man and his family at this very difficult time.
"The town is very busy this weekend. I opened the Festival of the Sea last night in the town.
"It's a typical annual family festival which caters for young and old and the fine weather too is attracting people to the area," he said.
