Deploy Android VPN apps on ChromeOS Flex devices

As an admin, you can deploy Android virtual private network (VPN) clients to users’ ChromeOS Flex devices to provide the same advanced networking capabilities available to ChromeOS devices.

Minimum hardware requirements

Android VPN apps are available on ChromeOS Flex devices that meet the following requirements:

  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 32 GB or larger solid state storage device
  • AMD-based device from 2019 or newer
  • Intel-based device from 2017 (Kaby Lake +) or newer (excluding Ice Lake)

Deploy VPN apps

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the Google Admin console.

If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. Follow the steps to Deploy Android apps to managed users on ChromeOS devices. Ensure that you automatically install the VPN app on users’ devices—When configuring app installation settings, choose Force install or Force install + pin to ChromeOS taskbar.
  3. On the Device settings page, ensure that Preload ArcVM image on ChromeOS Flex is set to Enable ArcVM image preloading. For details, read about the Preload ArcVM image on ChromeOS Flex setting.

If you’re deploying VPN apps to new installations of ChromeOS Flex, ensure the device has been restarted after device enrollment. The back-end services and app then download for the user. The download size is approximately 0.8 GB.
