Sony first introduced its ULT line in 2024 as an answer for major bass lovers. We've included both ULT Field and ULT Tower speakers in our guides to the best Bluetooth speakers and the best party speakers. And now, Sony is expanding the party with three new additions: ULT Tower Max, ULT Tower 7, and ULT Tower 5.

JBL just launched its next generation of home audio. The Cove series of speakers redefine JBL's home audio collection with sleek, inconspicuous designs that don't detract from your home decor but complement it.

The JBL Cove M1 Speaker is the smallest and most affordable of the Cove speakers at $229.95. It houses three soft dome tweeters, one in the center and two at an angle. Despite its small stature, it delivers sound to fill a room at any angle and bring thumping bass.

Two Cove M1 speakers can pair together to complete a stereo system, but they can also be paired with a JBL MK2 series soundbar to complete your home theater.

Slightly larger than the M1 is the Cove P1 speaker. It's the portable WiFi home speaker in JBL's collection, with a handle on the back so you can tote it around from room to room. It has a slightly upgraded performance thanks to its four tweeters (including one up-firing) and single woofer.

The Cove P1 has an IP56 rating, so it's splash-proof and dust-resistant, meaning it can even come outside. It has a charging dock in addition to a port with a USB-C connection. On a single charge, it lasts up to 14 hours.

Like the M1 speakers, two P1 speakers can be paired with a JBL MK2 soundbar to create a home theater system.

The most high-end speaker in the Cove collection is the X1, a WiFi speaker delivering 3D sound. It's equipped with four tweeters and two drivers that absolutely fill a room. While it's the biggest speaker, it doesn't just deliver the loudest sound; it also manages to spread sound as if it's radiating from an entire wall rather than just a little speaker, thanks to Dolby Atmos.

It manages to pick up the nuances in music, so even as you're enjoying the heart-pounding bass, you'll catch the subtler elements that usually fade into the background.

At launch, the X1 speaker cannot be paired with another X1 to act as rear channels for a home theater experience with a soundbar. TL;DR: Creative has launched the XF1, a Hi-Res desktop speaker with 72W RMS output, dual Hi-Res Audio certification, and app-based EQ control, priced at $179.99.

Creative just dropped a new desktop speaker that's punching well above its size. The XF1 is small enough to sit next to your monitor without taking over your desk, but it packs enough power and tech to make you forget it's tiny at all.

The XF1 delivers 72 watts of power, split between two speakers, each with its own dedicated amp for the woofer and tweeter. Instead of one amp trying to push both the bass and the treble at once, each part of the speaker gets its own power source. That means cleaner sound at any volume, without muddying or distorting when you crank it up.

Sound-wise, the XF1 covers a wide range, from deep, rumbling bass to super-high frequencies that most speakers in this price range just can't reproduce. Creative says you'll notice it in the small stuff: the rasp in someone's voice, a bass line under a game soundtrack, the finer notes in a piano piece.

It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth 6.0 with LDAC support, which means better audio quality over Bluetooth than you'd normally get. You can also plug in over USB-C for high-res playback, or use a standard 3.5mm cable if you want to keep things simple.

The speaker also connects to Creative's app, Nexus, which lets you fine-tune its sound. There's a 10-band EQ if you want to get hands-on, plus over 120 built-in presets tuned for specific games, movies, and music genres, so you don't have to be an audio expert to get it sounding right.

Marshall's Stockwell III officially launches on Aug. 4.

We first wrote about the announcement back in June, when Marshall confirmed it would keep the price at $249.99 despite adding solid upgrades over the previous generation. Now it's finally available at Marshall and Costco.

The main upgrade here is that the battery life has doubled — Marshall bumped it from 20 hours to 40+ hours, and it charges over USB-C, with a 30W PD charger getting you a full recharge in under 3 hours (or 7 hours of playtime from just a 20-minute quick charge). Water and dust resistance also improves, going from IPX4 on the previous model to IP55, so it can handle much more than the occasional splash.

Sound-wise, it keeps Marshall's True Stereophonic 360-degree audio, powered by a 3-inch woofer and two 1.75-inch wide-band drivers, and backed by a 65W amp for the woofer.

Bethany Allard, who covered the announcement back in June, pointed out that the previous Stockwell II earned praise from PCMag for its "rich bass and bright highs" — so the sound quality here was already solid, even before this upgrade.

Another cool detail: the battery is swappable — instead of tossing the speaker once the battery wears down, you can replace it yourself, along with the front and back grilles, silicone sleeve, and carrying strap. That's not something you see often with Bluetooth speakers, most of which are basically disposable once a part fails.

The baby-blue Marshall amp spotted behind Billie Joe Armstrong during Green Day’s 2026 Super Bowl performance finally has a name. Marshall has officially unveiled the 1959BJA Billie Joe Armstrong Artist Signature amp, a handwired 100W amplifier created with the Green Day frontman to recreate the distinctive tone behind the band’s breakthrough era.

The launch marks Marshall’s first artist signature amplifier in 14 years, and it’s been a long time coming. When Billie Joe Armstrong took the stage with Green Day at the 2026 Super Bowl, eagle-eyed fans spotted a striking baby-blue Marshall head sitting behind him, sparking plenty of speculation about what the band was using. Turns out that mystery amp was a preview of Marshall’s latest collaboration.

Available from July 21, the 1959BJA Billie Joe Armstrong Artist Signature amp will cost $3,999.99 in the US and will be sold through authorized Marshall retailers and on its official website.

The 1959BJA features a custom “Dookie Mod” inspired by the modified sound Billie Joe Armstrong developed with producer Rob Cavallo during Green Day’s breakthrough years. The amp is tuned to deliver the heavier distortion, fuller sound, and aggressive guitar tone associated with Billie Joe Armstrong’s classic Green Day sound.

The baby-blue finish takes inspiration from Billie Joe’s first guitar, Blue, while brass and silver panel details, custom branding, and Billie’s signature on the front and back panels give it a collector-worthy look. Unlike a traditional combo amp, the 1959BJA is a head-only unit, meaning guitarists can pair it with the cabinet of their choice.

The 1959BJA is built for guitarists who want more control over their sound, with settings for gain, volume, presence, and EQ. It also supports different speaker cabinet setups, making it flexible enough for both stage and studio use.

While Prime Day doesn't officially start at Amazon until June 23, we've already spotted plenty of early deals worth checking out. From the outside to the inside, there's quite a lot to like about the Sonos Sub Mini. It has a compact, sleek design and is fitted with dual custom woofers that help bring out the bass in the sounds you're listening to, whether you're enjoying a movie or show or blasting music from your favorite album. The woofers face inward as well, which helps cancel out distortion.

These days, it's not uncommon to see new generations of tech launch with higher prices than their predecessors.

Yet Marshall announced its latest Bluetooth speaker, the Stockwell III, on June 9 with a price of $249.99 — the same as the price of the Stockwell II. This decision is even more exceptional considering the older speaker launched seven years ago.

Despite the decision to keep the speaker at the same price point, Marshall is rolling out some significant improvements. Below, we break down what to expect from the speaker.

Marshall Stockwell III: Price and specs

The Marshall Stockwell III will be available for purchase on Aug. 4 on Marshall's website and at Costco for $249.99. Spec-wise, here's what to expect from the speaker:

• Battery life: 40 hours

• IP rating: IP55 rated

• Drivers: One three-inch woofer and two 1.75-inch wide band drivers

• Sound features: True Stereophonic 360-degree all-around audio

• Charging: USB-C

• Materials: Silicone sleeve, PU leather strap with velvet lining, brass control panel, metal front and back grilles

Better battery and options for longevity

The headline news with this upgrade is the battery life, which Marshall doubled from 20 hours on the Stockwell II to 40 hours on the Stockwell III.

The IPX4 water- and dust-proof rating of the Stockwell II gets boosted to IP55 on the Stockwell II, and the control panel gets a cosmetic upgrade with the brass detailing. Still, you can adjust bass and treble settings directly from the speaker as you could with the past generation, in a design choice that feels very aligned with Marshall's branding. Newly added is the M-button, which allows you to access your presets directly from the speaker.

Another major update is the replaceable parts, which have the potential to add some serious longevity to this speaker's battery life. This isn't the first time Marshall has pulled this move: the newly released Milton headphones also come with the option to buy and replace your own battery. In addition to the Stockwell III's battery, you can also replace the strap, front and back grilles, silicone sleeve, and carrying case.

The Stockwell III versus other Bluetooth speakers

When our sister site PC Mag reviewed the Stockton II back in 2019, they called out the impressively well-rounded sound with "rich bass and bright highs." While the reviewer appreciated the performance of the Stockton at the time, they did mention it was on the pricier end.

That's not unusual for Marshall, and though we can't speak firsthand to the experience of the Stockwell III, it is notable that there are options to replace parts on this speaker. The 360-sound feature also boosts this speaker's value prop, especially as it delivers in performance. That said, there are more affordable Bluetooth speaker options, including from Marshall (if the design is what draws you in most).

Summer has finally arrived. Marshall’s Heston 60 is a good soundbar for smaller rooms, especially if you want your speaker to make a visual statement. Marshall’s styling is, after all, in a category of its own, with its guitar amp-inspired looks and timeless Marshall flair. However, thanks to its surprisingly powerful output, plus an optional wireless subwoofer, this snazzy speaker can easily fill larger spaces, making it a great option for those on the fence about buying a full-size soundbar.

Like its much bigger sibling, the Marshall Heston 120, the Heston 60 commands a premium price ($699) compared to its nearest competitors, the Sonos Beam Gen 2 ($499), and the Bose Smart Soundbar ($549). In return for that bigger spend, you can expect a unique combination of features, style, and performance.

The Heston 60 isn’t my go-to choice for a small-footprint Dolby Atmos experience, but for everything else, it rocks.

Depending on the product, Marshall’s amp-inspired design can go from wild to mild. The Heston 120, with its top-mounted, knurled knobs, has a real look-at-me vibe, while the Heston 60 is a little more demure: it trades the knobs for nearly flush brass-toned buttons.

You still get the black (or cream), faux-leather cabinet, the distinctive Marshall logo, and a salt’n’pepper fabric grille (the ‘fret’ in Marshall-speak), and it still looks great.

The lack of knobs is partially a proportional thing — they’d look a little odd on the Heston 60’s smaller frame — and partially a practical thing. When wall-mounted (which you can easily do thanks to the included wall-mount grommets), the Heston 60’s controls face forward, not up, and sit at the bottom edge, where knobs would just look weird, poking out into space. Another benefit to going knobless: fewer visual distractions.

Speaking of distractions, the Marshall Wi-Fi app lets you alter the brightness of the control panel LEDs. That’s not a big deal when the Heston 60 is sitting on a surface, but when wall-mounted, it’s essential, as those little lights will be shining right at you.

Cleverly, both the control panel and the Marshall script logo are magnetic. When you swap from flat to wall-mounted, you can reposition both pieces so the Heston 60 retains its looks.

Yes, you can decide not to affix the Marshall logo, and no, it doesn’t have magnets.  They’re behind the grille (I mean fret), so you won’t be able to stick the logo to your car, your fridge, or any other metal surface unless you use glue.

Another clever feature for wall-mounting is the removable back compartment cover. It acts as a cable guide, ensuring you always get a clean install, regardless of which way you place the speaker.

At just over 2.5 inches tall, it should tuck under almost any stand-mounted TV. Partially blocking the top of the speaker shouldn’t be a problem, but leave the sides unobstructed — the angled, side-firing drivers need room to do their job. 

Repairability didn’t strike me as being very important on the massive, 15.5-pound Heston 120 — I figure most folks won’t be moving it once they set it in place — but the Heston 60, at just six pounds, is a relative featherweight. You might well want to move it from room to room, in which case, being able to replace the fret, end caps, drivers, and even the circuit boards could be a bonus.

Marshall Heston 60 review: Set up

If all you want is TV sound, setting up the Heston 60 is dead-simple: plug the speaker into your TV via an HDMI cable and then plug it into the wall with the power cord (both are included in the box). You can control the volume using your TV’s remote.

To get the most out of the Heston 60, however, you’ll need the Marshall Wi-Fi app (gold icon, not silver). It will walk you through the process of connecting the Heston to your Wi-Fi network (vital for Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Tidal Connect, etc.), download any required software updates, and prompt you to complete the soundbar’s built-in room correction process, which takes less than two minutes.

Because the Heston doesn’t ship with its own remote, the app is also the way you’ll control the speaker’s source (HDMI/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/Aux-in), EQ, and sound modes (music/movies/night/voice) from your sofa.

While the app is easy to use, it can suffer from long communication lags. If I left the app (say to start a stream from Spotify or Tidal) and then returned, it could take the Marshall app up to 10 seconds to reconnect to the Heston 60.

Marshall Heston 60 review: Connections and controls

On the back panel, you’ll find an HDMI-ARC/eARC port — standard for soundbars these days — and two far less common connections: a 3.5 analog input and a wired subwoofer output.

I’ve gotta give props to Marshall here. Most compact soundbars are treated as TV speakers with Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth if you want to play music. With the 3.5mm input, the Heston 60 can be connected to a turntable or literally any audio source that has an analog output.

The sub-out is even more beneficial. While the Heston 60 is designed to pair wirelessly with the Heston Sub 200 ($599), the sub output lets you use any powered subwoofer with an RCA input. This could save you a lot of money, as used powered subs are readily available for far less than the price of Marshall’s wireless unit.

The port that baffles me somewhat is the USB-C. On the Heston 120, it’s a handy power supply for stick-style streamers that plug into that speaker’s HDMI inputs. Since the Heston 60 doesn’t have any HDMI inputs, I’m not sure what you’ll use it for. Maybe recharging your phone?

The Heston lacks an Ethernet jack, but it supports Wi-Fi 6. With Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, UPnP, Tidal Connect, and Spotify Connect, the Heston 60 can connect to almost any music source. And with native decoding of AAC, Mpeg4, ALAC, FLAC, LPCM, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, and WMA9, it will play almost any content you throw at it.

Bluetooth 5.3 with support for SBC, AAC, and LC3 codecs provides ad-hoc audio streaming from a mobile device.

The top controls are intuitive and easy to use, with dedicated buttons for source, play/pause/track skipping, volume, and sound mode. Then there’s the “Prog.” button, which I assume is short for “programmable.” No idea why Marshall labeled it that when, in reality, it’s how you access your stored preset. And yes, I mean preset, singular. In the Marshall app, you can pick a currently playing source from Spotify or an internet radio station from the embedded Airable feature to be associated with that programmable button.

There’s no power button. Once you plug it in, the soundbar is on all of the time. It will switch to a low-power standby mode when it hasn’t been actively used in a while.

Marshall Heston 60 review: For movies and shows

Under the hood, the Heston 60 sports 7 discrete drivers (five full-range, plus two woofers) and amps. That’s more than both the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Bose’s Smart Soundbar, which only have five powered drivers apiece. The key difference is Heston 60’s ability to process low-frequency effects (LFE) in a 5.1-channel arrangement (Beam is a 5.0 system and the Smart Soundbar is 3.0.2).

When it comes to watching movies, this translates into a much more gutsy sound than you’d expect from a compact bar. Marshall sent me the Heston Sub 200 to try out, and there were times when I’d forget that the Sub 200 was unplugged from the wall — such is the Heston 60’s low-end punch.

There’s excellent energy and presence throughout the rest of the frequency range as well. The Heston 60 excels at creating big, cinematic sound. It’s not perfect, however. The speaker seems to struggle to keep soundtrack elements from overlapping and interfering with each other. This is most noticeable with dialogue. In scenes where two characters are speaking, without much background sound, voices are clear and intelligible. When the background gets busy, like in the bombing run scene from Unbroken, speech can get muddied. You can use Voice mode to help with this, but the higher you boost this setting, the more you lose the lower frequencies that make movies so enjoyable.

I’m not sure, but I suspect this is tied to Marshall’s use of five full-range drivers and no tweeters. The Sonos Beam Gen 2 uses a central tweeter and offers better overall dialogue clarity.

There are also times when the Heston 60 seems confused about how to process that amazing low-end. During the Aston Martin chase scene from No Time To Die, there were moments when I expected to hear a thump or thud (and didn’t) and moments where I heard them and hadn’t been expecting any.

Speaking of No Time To Die, that same clip is one of my go-to references for Dolby Atmos testing, along with select scenes from Dune and Ford v Ferrari. All of these scenes demonstrated that the Heston 60 can fully deliver on the emotion of these movies, but spatial effects — most notably height channel sounds — are limited.

This isn’t unusual for a compact speaker with no dedicated height drivers. The Heston 60 (like the Beam Gen 2) has to virtualize any height channel content, a tough challenge, especially when the same drivers are being used to generate all of the other sound you’re hearing. It also means there’s no way to goose the height channel levels to help out.

Still, even though there’s not much in the way of added height, the Heston 60 generates a decently wide soundstage, which goes a long way to creating a sense of immersion.

Marshall Heston 60 review: For Music

Like its bigger sibling, the Heston 120, the Marshall Heston 60 is a great music speaker. The energy, bass response, and overall emotional impact it imparts to movies translates beautifully to music.

Once again, the Heston’s dual woofers are the main ingredient, lending a resonant quality to all music styles. The warmth and tone remind me a lot of the Sonos Beam Gen 2, but with an extra level of musicality. 

I really like the Heston’s default Music mode tuning, which sounds better the louder you play, but each mode can also be tweaked using the Marshall app’s equalizer.

Unfortunately, the Heston 60’s music performance can be like Jekyll and Hyde, depending on the format and connection method. Normally, Google Cast is the most reliable way to stream high-quality audio, but doing so from Amazon Music on an iPhone produced abnormally low volume levels.  

Direct streaming (Tidal Connect/Spotify Connect), AirPlay, and Bluetooth were all more reliable and sounded great.

Dolby Atmos Music is another quirky situation: make sure the Heston 60 is set to Movie mode. Atmos Music has an extremely low level in Music mode. The soundbar defaults to Music mode when the source is set to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or line-in, so if something sounds amiss, check the mode and try one of the other settings.

The Heston 60 will play Dolby Atmos Music tracks, both from TV or streamer-based apps like Apple Music, Tidal, or Amazon Music, or directly via Tidal Connect. Ordinarily, Atmos Music on a capable soundbar is a treat, with an expanded soundstage and (depending on the mix) intriguing use of 3D space. Similar to the Heston’s Atmos performance with movie content, you just don’t get the same level of immersion that you would with a higher-end speaker like the Heston 120. Moreover, on the Heston 60, Atmos Music tends to exhibit sharper, more sibilant highs than conventional stereo.

It’s worth noting that, as great as the Heston 60 is as a standalone music speaker, it can’t compare to either Sonos’ or Bose’s multiroom functionality, and the lack of any music management within the Marshall app means the Heston is simply an endpoint for your favorite streaming apps. Still, if you want a soundbar that can do vinyl, the choice is clear — neither the Beam Gen 2 nor the Smart Soundbar can connect to turntables.

Marshall Heston 60 review: Sound adjustments

Built-in room calibration is another bonus for such a small speaker like the Heston 60, though don’t expect to be wowed by the result. Depending on your room size, shape, and furniture, you may get a new EQ curve that keeps the bass levels from becoming overbearing (or may give them a slight tweak). In my TV room, it didn’t make any difference at all.

If you’re not happy with the calibration, you can repeat the process or disable it entirely.

Each sound mode gives the speaker a different tuning. Music tends to be the most neutral, while Movie emphasizes highs and lows. Night reduces dynamic range for low-intensity viewing, and Voice de-emphasizes lows and lower-mids while boosting speech frequencies.

If you don’t love the sound of a specific mode, you can tweak it using the custom EQ feature. These tweaks then become associated with that mode and will stick around even as you move from one mode to another.

Is the Marshall Heston 60 worth it?

At $699, the Marshall Heston 60 is one of the most expensive compact soundbars you can buy. Its closest competitors, the Sonos Beam Gen 2 and Bose Smart Soundbar are priced up to $200 lower (and get regular discounts throughout the year).

An up to 40 percent premium over these two excellent speakers is a lot to justify, and I’m not sure that the Heston 60 does so.

For its size, it produces big, bold sound for both movies and music, and its built-in woofers deliver stronger bass than the Beam or the Smart Soundbar. I really like the flexibility of being able to add any subwoofer, and having an analog input increases the Heston’s versatility. It’s also hard to deny that Marshall’s iconic design makes a classy addition to any room — it doesn’t look like your average soundbar.

And yet, the Heston’s Dolby Atmos effects aren’t significantly better than the Beam or Smart Soundbar, and for some things, notably dialogue clarity, expandability, and multiroom audio, these two competitors have the edge.

To seriously consider the Heston 60 over these alternatives, you need to value all of its unique features, not just some of them. If that sounds like you, the Heston 60 is very easy to recommend. It may not be the perfect compact soundbar, but no other speaker offers its particular mix of style, sound, and features.

Why do some IP ratings have two digits?

The first digit (0–6) rates protection against solids, and the second digit (0–9) rates protection against liquids.

This marks the first major soundbar redesign from Bose in over a decade. It pushed the dialogue of a noisy scene without distorting any of the background sound.

The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar also looks incredibly sleek and sports a tactile dial that allows users to control volume levels without picking up their TV remote or phone.

If you've never heard of Woot, it's an Amazon-owned company that offers deeply discounted products across tons of categories — usually due to overstock. The JBL Flip 7 is typically $149.95, but you can pick it up on Woot for only $84.95, while the Charge 6 usually costs $199.95, but is down to just $109.95. Because it's owned by Amazon, you'll even get free standard shipping on Woot as a Prime member.

Mashable's shopping team has tested tons of Bluetooth speakers, but the JBL Charge 6 consistently comes out on top. It's extremely portable at just 2 pounds, with a handy removable strap. Yet, it's powerful enough to crank out the tunes for an outdoor party and virtually indestructible (waterproof, dustproof, drop-proof). It'll last up to 24 hours on a single charge and, as a bonus, it can charge your other devices via USB-C.

The JBL Flip 7 is slightly smaller, but can still pump out massive sound in a water bottle-sized package. It packs a 16-hour battery life and the same indestructible build. If you want a speaker that can fit into the bottle cage on your bike or a cup holder in a golf cart, this is the one to grab. Either option you choose, you won't be disappointed — especially at these low prices.

Sonos has a new portable speaker.

This may not sound groundbreaking, given the company already has two portable speakers in its lineup, the Sonos Move 2 and Sonos Roam 2, putting the new Play smack in the middle in terms of size. But I bet the news put a smile on many Sonos fans' faces, as Play was just what Sonos needed.

The Roam 2 is portable (Sonos calls it ultra-portable, but we're not sure about that), but it doesn't come near other Sonos speakers in terms of sound. (One Mashable editor described it as "tinny.") The Move 2, on the other hand, sounds amazing, but it's just too big to be called a true portable Bluetooth speaker. I'm not kidding, it weighs 3 kilograms.

But the Sonos Play isn't just an ordinary product launch. It's part of a potential Sonos redemption arc following a disastrous 2024 app re-launch. The company has been off the audio scene as it solved software problems, making the Play part of a larger potential comeback.

After spending a week with the new Sonos speaker, I found it's just the right mix of portability and sound.

Not too heavy, not too small

Sonos sent me a black review unit of the Sonos Play 2 (it also comes in white), and as soon as I unpacked it, I thought this was the right size for a Sonos portable speaker. You can comfortably grab it with one hand, hand it over to someone, or put it in a bag. It's not super light, but at 1.3 kilograms, it's manageable.

On the back, you'll find a tiny carrying loop for extra portability, though I never found an actual use for it.

Design-wise, well, it's a Sonos speaker. Like pretty much every other Sonos, it's wrapped in a black mesh with an understated, black-on-black company logo on the front. On top, however, it has a rubber surface with buttons you need to actually press, unlike the touch buttons on the Move 2. It's not as fancy, but probably makes the speaker more resistant to the elements (Sonos says the Play is waterproof up to IP67 specs; the Move 2 only goes to IP56).

On the back, there's a power button, a Bluetooth button, a button that lets you disable voice commands, and a USB-C connector for wired listening (you do need a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle). The connector isn't needed for charging, as the Sonos comes with a charging base similar to the one on the Move 2. Thankfully, you can charge the Sonos Play with a USB-C cable if you're on the move and don't want to lug the charging base around with you.

A battery that will survive a camping trip

Battery life on the Play is rated for up to 24 hours, just like on the Move 2 (the Roam 2 only has up to 10 hours). In my experience, the Play's battery is good enough for about two long evenings of partying (in my age, that means having friends over for dinner and playing music in the background for a couple of hours). It might not be enough for a third.

At home or near it, battery is not an issue as there's always a way to easily charge the Play. But I think its battery is good enough to endure a short camping trip, and that's basically all you can ask for.

The Play also has a cool, last-resort trick for when your phone is out of juice: You can connect it (or any other USB-C device) to Play, which then acts as a portable 35Wh battery.

It's loud, but not very refined

The Play is loud, and it sounds good, but make no mistake: It's not anywhere near the level of Sonos Move 2.

The sound is punchy and precise, often leaving me surprised at just how deep the bass goes, or how clean a certain instrument is; a good test of both is John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme."

When things get more complex, however, such as when the entire band joins in full blast in Queens of the Stone Age's "Little Sister," the sound will get mushy and cramped, especially at loud volumes. In contrast, the Move 2 continues to sound amazing no matter the volume or genre.

It's not an entirely unfair comparison. Both speakers have stereo sound. The Play has one mid-woofer paired with two angled tweeters, and three Class-H digital amps, and the Move 2 has the same specs, though it has the more efficient, Class-D digital amps. Of course, that mid-woofer inside the Move is much larger, and I guess that makes all the difference.

One thing to note: Sonos Play has a "Loudness" setting enabled by default. You can turn it off in the Sonos app settings (it's buried under Sound — EQ), and I suggest you try it out both ways. When it's on, both the bass and treble get louder, which can sound attractive in certain genres and settings, but I preferred to keep Loudness off as it made the sound more balanced.

Another thing to note: The Play isn't one of those 360-degree speakers that sound good no matter where it's turned. It does cast a wide sound, but you still need to be facing it to get the best results.

The app isn't nearly as bad as you might think

Sonos made the wrong kind of headlines when it launched a big overhaul of its app in 2024. The new app was so bad that Sonos scrambled for years to fix all the issues, while apologizing to its users almost on a monthly basis.

I'm happy to report that, as it stands, the app isn't too bad. Adding new devices isn't a chore, and the home page, while sometimes confusing, can be (lightly) edited to be more to your liking. And while I haven't had any major issues, such as complete freezes or speakers dropping out of my system for no reason, there's still some room for improvement.

For example, finding the album I want almost always takes at least one step more than I'd like. If I just use the search function in the Sonos app by typing the artist's name, I'll get a combination of results from Apple Music, Spotify, and Sonos Radio (the first two require a subscription, and you need to connect them to the Sonos app for this to work). But tapping on the artist will only yield me a list of songs, with no obvious way to get actual albums.

I've found that the best way to get what I want is to limit my search to just one service (such as Apple Music), which gets me a more comprehensive list of results.

Also, some elements of the user interface can be slow and, frankly, baffling. For example, touching the volume slider in the app opens another card with exactly the same volume slider, but now your finger is in the wrong place to actually slide it. Why, Sonos?

It's not a huge deal, but little things like this do, eventually, make you wonder whether using the Sonos app over Apple Music, Spotify, or Tidal is even worth it.

Well, it is if you have more than one Sonos speaker.

In the Sonos app, I can just go to whatever's playing right now, tap on the speaker name at the bottom, and get a list of all the Sonos speakers in my home. From there, I can get my music to play on all the speakers or pick just the ones I want, as well as adjust the volume (both in general and for each speaker individually). Given just how great a Sonos system sounds when you have a couple of speakers in a room, especially with Trueplay enabled (the tech that optimizes the sound based on where the speakers are positioned in a room), this is a pretty great option to have.

You can do these things via AirPlay, of course. But it's easy to get lost when you juggle multiple speakers, devices, and headphones; I prefer to keep the Sonos system under the Sonos app umbrella.

As far as voice assistants go, you still only get Sonos's own, or Amazon Alexa; nothing else is offered. The Sonos assistant is alright, but in the age of super-smart AI, I sometimes wished it were smarter.

The right size, but the price isn't quite right

I guess the main beef I have with the Play is that I'm spoiled by the Move 2. Sonos' new portable speaker sounds good, it's loud enough, and has all the features you'd expect, with excellent battery life. But you just don't get the sonic nirvana that the Move 2 provides.

If the Play was offered at around two hundred bucks, which seems to be the sweet spot for a decent portable speaker these days, I'd say it's an instant buy, especially if you're already invested in the Sonos ecosystem. But the price for Sonos Play is $299 in the U.S. and (ouch) €349 in Europe, which is around $402, and that's a lot of dough for what Sonos Play offers.

I still recommend the Play if you want a truly portable Sonos speaker. Its bigger brother, as great as it sounds, is just too big to carry around. Just know that you're paying a pretty hefty premium for the name.

Marshall, purveyor of vintage-inspired headphones and speakers, is launching its second party speaker, the Bromley 450. The 450 is a lightweight and compact companion to Marshall's first party speaker, the Bromley 750. But despite its smaller stature, it has a big presence in the loudest of rooms.

Luckily, it's lightweight, weighing just over 26 pounds. It's fit for gatherings both indoors and outside with an IP55 rating, making it dust and splash-proof. It includes two combo jacks so you can equip it with mics or DJ equipment.

The Sony ULT Tower 9 Bluetooth Karaoke Party Speaker comes with plenty of features that make it perfect for parties all year long. With 360-degree lighting, this speaker really can bring life to any event.

In Mashable's roundup of the best party speakers, the Sony ULT Tower 9 earns a honorable mention. Today's sale of $748 applies to the battery-powered model of this massive speaker which gets up to 25 hours of battery life before it'll need to recharge. Plus, a 10-minute charge gives you 180 minutes of party time.

One of the downsides the Mashable lists about the speaker is its high price. But thanks to today's deal, the battery-powered model is down to the same price as the plug-in version.

"It has two built-in slots for holding wireless microphones and a karaoke feature in the Sony Sound Connect app," according to the Mashable review. "On top of that, it was top-to-bottom lights, which can be controlled with touch controls or via the app. Typically, we find that bass-boost features throw off the overall sound balance, but that's less of a problem with this behemoth than with other speakers in the ULT line."

Before the perfect spring days begin and you break out the barbecue and invite the neighbors over, upgrade your parties with the Sony ULT Tower 9 Bluetooth Karaoke Party Speaker. It's currently sitting at the lowest price we've seen in 2026 and snagging it now means you can get some practice karaoke rounds in before the first party.

Sonos, a brand known for pricy but good speakers (and other audio equipment), has mostly been in the spotlight recently due to its botched mobile app, which came out in July 2024 and was so bad that it took the company many months to fix.

Now, finally, Sonos is back to what it does best: Producing high quality speakers (amazingly, the company hasn't launched any speakers since May 2024, if you don't count the Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar). Even better, Sonos' new speakers won't burn too big of a hole in your pocket.

The first one on the menu is Sonos Play, a portable speaker that sits in between Sonos' ultra-portable Roam 2, and the hefty Move 2. Having reviewed the Move 2, I can tell you that something like Play was sorely needed; as great as it sounds, the Move 2 isn't all that portable.

Sonos Play is a portable, waterproof speaker with 24-hour battery life, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support, a line-in jack, button controls, and a voice assistant. It offers stereo sound thanks to its dual, angled tweeters, and two bass radiators taking care of the lower sound frequencies. It also weighs 1.3 kilograms; this doesn't make it the lightest portable speaker out there, but it's a lot better than Move 2's 3 kilograms.

The other new Sonos speaker is called the Sonos Era 100 SL, and it's almost the new entry-level device in Sonos' lineup. I say almost, because at $189 it's still $10 pricier than the portable Sonos Roam 2, but it should technically offer more in terms of sound.

The Era 100 SL is a cheaper version of the Sonos Era 100, which remains a part of Sonos' lineup. It also has stereo sound, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, a line-in connector, and on speaker controls, but it lacks voice control. Both speakers look very similar and have dual tweeters and a woofer, so you can expect pretty much the same performance. The Era 100 SL is, simply put, the Era 100 for people who don't need voice control.

Sonos Play will become available on March 31 with a price tag of $299 (€349 in Europe). The Sonos Era 100 SL is coming on March 26 for $189 (€199 in Europe).

We’re living in the era of the wearable. Smartwatches are replacing traditional timepieces, smart rings double as finger jewelry and health devices, and clip-on open earbuds make for fashionable ear accessories.

Now, we’re at the point where wearable speakers are a thing — or least, JLab seems to think so. The company just developed these portable Bluetooth speakers, which look like monstrous-sized wireless headphones for ogres. They're called the Blue XL Speaker Headphones, and they can be yours for $100.

The only thing more bonkers than the concept? The design itself. As someone who tests headphones and speakers, I’m obligated to check them out even if they're a weird novelty. Well, the Blue XL Speaker Headphones didn’t disappoint — at least on the weirdness front.

JLab loves to experiment

This is a company that has built its reputation on low pricing and filling a niche. It was one of the first audio brands to launch wireless earbuds with charging cases that featured built-in charging cables. The Blue XL Speaker Headphones are JLab’s second most ambitious creation – a limited-edition release that draws more “umms” than “oohs.”

I chuckled a few times during the unboxing. My 5-year-old toddler burst out laughing when he saw the speakers around my neck and asked, “what the heck is that?” My wife had a similar reaction. Basically, we all found the Blue XL Speaker Headphones hilarious. They’re certainly nowhere near as stylish as category favorites like the Beats Pill.

They're also outlandishly heavy (52 oz., or 3.25 lbs). Wearing them around the neck weighed down my shoulders, giving me a frumpy posture.

More importantly, if you’re thinking of buying the Blue XL Speaker Headphones as a home speaker alternative, you better think long and hard about their placement and how they will be positioned. The earcups must face outwards, rather than pointing at each other, to get the best sound output.

What about hanging them, say from a headphone stand? I tried that. The product is too long and won’t remain stable unless it’s propped on the back of the stand, which is a ridiculous-looking setup.

But how do the speaker headphones sound?

In a word: impressive.

JLab doesn’t have the sonic pedigree of legacy audio companies like Sennheiser and Sony. What it does provide is adequate sound at highly competitive price points.

The Blue XL Speaker Headphones feature dual 2.5-inch drivers and passive radiators that blast incredibly loud audio and a powerful bass response. Lows have an effective presence on most contemporary recordings. Afro punk, EDM, hip-hop, and rock fans should enjoy what they hear. 

Listeners who like vocal performances and podcasts won’t be sold on the Blue XL Speaker Headphones’ audio quality, however. Vocals and high-range sounds (6 kHz to 20 kHz) are subdued. Sibilance is noticeable when listening to dialogue-heavy content; consonants like 's', 'sh', 'z', and 'ch' sound harsh. 

True stereo sound is out of the question — because the speakers don’t support JLab’s LabSync technology to pair multiple speakers at once. This a standalone unit with two mono speakers that broadcast the same thing. 

And in case you were wondering how it does with calls ... well, you can’t use the Blue XL Speaker Headphones as a speakerphone, either. 

Conclusion: a hilarious novelty

The Blue XL Speaker Headphones aren’t ideal wireless headphones or speakers, mainly due to their enormous size. You must stretch your imagination to find any use for them.

To their credit, the Blue XL Speaker Headphones perform a lot better than you would think. Each driver pumps out strong, bass-filled sound. The dial with a multifunctional button is distinctive and works well. Up to 20 hours per charge is more than what most similarly priced speakers offer. And the overall build quality is solid.

I would have recommended hanging a pair from each ceiling corner to create wide surround sound, but the lack of multi-speaker connectivity kills that idea. 

The main purpose this product serves? Getting a laugh out of anyone who looks at them. Keep in mind that April Fool’s Day is around the corner!

Still, $100 is generous for these speakers, even as a white elephant gift.

In short, the Blue XL Speaker Headphones raise questions that inevitably lead to disappointing answers. No one is going to wear them outside unless they’re begging for attention, and the responses won’t be flattering. Sizing is excessive — you can’t set these speakers up anywhere.

JLab suggests placing them on a table, but there’s no direction on how to properly position them. Also, there’s no mention of the heavy reverberation they produce when placed on certain surfaces. Other shortcomings include no IP rating or app support to personalize the speakers. 

To all appearances, JLab conceived the Blue XL Speaker Headphones as a joke and ran with it. But after you get over the novelty factor, it will be hard to take them seriously.

The JLab Blue XL limited-edition headphones are currently out of stock, though you can find them on eBay for twice their retail price.

One of my toxic traits is that I can't stand "ruining" the overall feel of my living space with ugly tech (big black boxes, long soundbars, etc.). Cords and all their friends can eff right off. Sony has announced two new Bluetooth turntables after seven years of radio silence.

The original Sony PS-LX310BT developed a cult following in that time as one of the few worthwhile beginner-friendly Bluetooth record players (along with the Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT-USB). Now, instead of scouring Reddit for budget Bluetooth record player recommendations, those cautiously looking to replace their old Sony PS-LX310BT have two direct successors as an upgrade option: The $399.99 Sony PS-LX3BT (available to pre-order now) or the slightly more premium $499.99 Sony PS-LX5BT (coming this spring).

Unfortunately, the new record players come with a higher price than the original. For reference, the 2019 PS-LX310BT costs $448, but it was available for $199.99 for many years.

The relatively random announcement came just days after Sony announced that it was handing its home entertainment business (TVs, home audio gear) to TCL. The news didn't sound overly promising for anyone holding on to hope that Sony would ever make a new turntable. What's different about the new Sony Bluetooth turntables

As well as the beloved PS-LX310BT has aged, the technology is still creeping up on a decade old. The upgraded playback tech in the 2026 models includes expanded support for Bluetooth codecs like aptX and aptX-Adaptive, minimizing the amount of crucial sound details that are lost over a standard wireless connection. Both support 33⅓ records and 45s and feature built-in phono preamps to connect directly to a speaker system.

The PS-LX5BT features a Moving Magnet cartridge, more precise stylus pressure, and a gold-plated audio jack that's said to elevate wired connections. This is clearly the option geared more toward stricter audiophiles, while the PS-LX3BT would be a great record player for beginners.

What's not different about the new Sony Bluetooth turntables

What hasn't changed in either is the fact the PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT are still both fully automatic, belt-drive turntables. That might be a bummer for some vinyl purists — the lowering of the needle by hand and nostalgic pre-track crackling play just as much of a role in the overall turntable experience as the quality of the sound itself.

However, as analog media makes a comeback, there's definitely room in the market for simpler automatic record players, especially ones with Bluetooth features. With these Bluetooth record players, you can enjoy the classic sound of vinyl records beamed directly to your favorite wireless headphones. And if you already have Sony headphones, connecting should be even easier.

We may be in that weird timeframe known to most as “Betwixmas,” but that hasn’t stopped brands from launching new ideas and releasing products just before the new year hits. Just last week, Samsung introduced its 2026 sound device lineup. It’s not available to purchase just yet, so if you’d like to see it in person, you’ll have to go to CES 2026 in Las Vegas (Jan. 6-9).

The higher-ups are pretty stoked about the newest designs. “For more than a decade, Samsung has shaped the evolution of home audio through advanced acoustics, intelligent features, and thoughtful design,” Hun Lee, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said in a press release. “We’re continuing that legacy with next-generation sound devices designed to deliver a rich, expressive performance for any space and moment."

Whether these new devices are actually revolutionary remains to be seen, but here’s everything we know so far.

There are two new soundbars

Samsung’s 2026 audio lineup includes two new soundbars: the HW-Q990H and the HW-QS90H.

The first is supposed to deliver Samsung’s most “immersive soundbar experience yet,” with an 11.1.4-channel system, a 7.0.2 main bar, 4.0.2 rear speakers, and a dual eight-inch driver with a built-in compact active subwoofer. This soundbar also features “next-generation AI tuning,” though we’re not entirely sure what that entails just yet. This is the first Samsung soundbar to have “Sound Elevation” technology, which Samsung says “lifts dialogue toward the center of the screen.” This soundbar also debuts Samsung’s “Auto Volume” feature, so there’s consistent volume across channels and content.

The second soundbar (the HW-QS90H) is an all-in-one setup that focuses on “aesthetic versatility.” It’s a 7.1.2-channel system with 13 drivers (including nine wide-range speakers) and a built-in Quad Bass Woofer system, so you shouldn't need a separate subwoofer with this one. It also features a “Convertible Fit” design that gives you the option to mount it on the wall or set it on a table — the built-in gyro sensor auto-adapts based on its orientation.

There are two new WiFi speakers

In addition to the soundbars, Samsung is expanding its portfolio with two WiFi speakers, the “Music Studio 5” and “Music Studio 7." These speakers are designed to fit your decor with what Samsung calls a “timeless dot concept” (designed by Erwan Bouroullec), but they definitely look Pixar-coded — like a giant, sleek eye.

The Music Studio 7 offers 3.1.1-channel spatial audio through left, front, right, and top speakers. There’s also an AI Dynamic Bass Control system that gives you the ability to play high-res audio (up to 24-bit/96kHz) with minimal distortion. It's black (there aren’t any other colorways at the moment) and works as a standalone or can be paired with compatible speakers, soundbars, or TVs.

The Music Studio 5 (model LS50H) is a smaller, “gallery-inspired” design for more compact spaces. It features a four-inch woofer and dual tweeters with a built-in waveguide for balanced sound. This speaker also includes the AI Dynamic Bass Control and supports WiFi casting, streaming services, and Bluetooth connectivity.

A more connected ecosystem

While each of these devices is designed to stand on its own, the real goal here seems to be total integration. Samsung is leaning heavily into Q-Symphony, the tech that allows your TV speakers and external audio gear play at the same time rather than fighting for control. For this new lineup, they’ve bumped the limit to allow up to five sound devices to pair with a single TV at once. The system also uses AI to map out your room and calibrate the sound based on where you’ve actually placed the speakers, which should theoretically make that "eye" on your bookshelf and the bar under your TV feel like parts of the same immersive setup.

The latest edition features a new tweeter dome design that delivers powerful, clearer bass and crisper, higher frequencies. It comes in a variety of fun colors and includes a new PushLock system with interchangeable accessories. Choose from a carabiner or a loop or keep it attachment-free. My personal favorite perk of the Flip speakers (I have the Flip 5) is that they fit into cup holders and water bottle cages. I pop mine into the cage on my bike for on-the-move tuneage.

If you're in the market for a new soundbar, I just found a deal you won't want to miss. (Not to be dramatic, but it's true.)

With the exception of Black Friday, Sonos doesn't offer many big discounts on its products throughout the year. So when you see a good price, you should snag it. For instance, now's the time to grab the Sonos Era 100, as it's on sale for about 22% off.

Released in 2023 as a direct replacement for the Sonos One (which we loved), the Sonos Era 100 is "the best smart speaker for the money," as our sister site CNET noted in their review. It packs two tweeters and can produce a stereo sound on its own, unlike its predecessor. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer spatial audio (you'll need the Era 300 for that, which is $200 more). But as our friends at CNET wrote, "If you want a smart speaker that's compact and sounds great, the Sonos Era 100 is an excellent choice and an easy recommendation." And at $169, it's a pretty great deal.
