  • What do photovoltaics, offshore wind and hydrogen infrastructure have in common? They all rely on materials that are durable, dependable, and engineered for the long term. Steel is more than just structural support – it’s a key enabler of energy technologies. In our latest journal article, we explore the decisive role that advanced steels play across a wide range of renewable energy technologies – from offshore foundations and turbine shafts to hydrogen pipelines and geothermal systems. We show how specific material properties – such as corrosion resistance, toughness, and thermal stability – are key to ensuring long-term performance, safety and economic viability under extreme operating conditions. 📄 Read the full article: “Renewable energy needs more than sun and wind – it needs the right steel” ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gZ47JwdN 📘 Bonus: Download our free guide: 5 Mistakes in Energy Applications – and how to avoid them with the right steel decision

  • At Swiss Steel Group, our commitment to reducing emissions doesn’t stop at our gates. While Scope 1 and 2 emissions cover direct and energy-related emissions from our own operations, Scope 3 includes other indirect emissions that occur in our value chain – and they represent a significant part of our carbon footprint. 🔍 Where do our Scope 3 emissions come from? The majority arise upstream from: 🧪 Purchased materials (Scope 3.1) like ferroalloys, slag builders, and deoxidizing agents used to tailor steel composition. ⚡ Production and transport of fuels and electricity (Scope 3.3) 🗑️ Waste disposal, especially landfilled slag (Scope 3.5) Downstream emissions also play a role: 🏭 Processing of our steel at customer sites (Scope 3.10) 🔄 End-of-life recycling preparation (Scope 3.12) One impactful strategy to reduce Scope 3 emissions? 👉 Sourcing scrap that already contains valuable elements such as chromium and nickel. This reduces the need for primary alloys with high carbon intensity.

  • Our health and safety management system is built on the Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle 🔄 integrating legal requirements ⚖️ occupational safety standards ⛑️ and internal policies 📄. Key elements include risk assessment, behavior-based safety training, workplace inspections, near-miss reporting, accident analysis, and strict adherence to industry-specific standards. This systematic approach ensures that safety is embedded in every process – from the shopfloor to senior leadership. ↕️ How to turn safety from a policy into a shared mindset? Safety can’t just live in documents or on posters - it has to live in people. When colleagues feel responsible not just for themselves, but for each other, safety becomes second nature. It’s not about rules alone, it’s about culture: listening, speaking up, challenging, and caring. That’s how we move from compliance to commitment and that’s where the real change happens. 💡

  • A Nadcap certificate with maximum validity? 🌟 That’s only possible where processes aren’t just followed, but continuously improved, stabilized, and jointly developed – day after day. Our Witten site has successfully completed the Nadcap audit in Heat Treating with zero findings. This represents not only the highest level of recognition within the aerospace industry – but also: 🏅 We remain part of the exclusive Merit Program ➡️ means we benefit from extended audit intervals 📜 Maximum certificate validity Nadcap is an internationally recognized audit and certification program for special manufacturing processes in the aerospace and defense sectors. This achievement is more than a technical success – it reflects what defines our group: precision down to the finest detail and reliability that proves itself not only in audits, but in daily operations. ✈️ Designed to fly. Built for a safe and sustainable sky.

🚀 We’ve just taken a big step into the future: our new additive manufacturing machine is up and running! The innovation? Welding wire becomes the raw material, replacing forging and machining. No waste, shorter lead times, lower CO₂ footprint. 🏗️We can print a component in few hours compared of weeks for a forged part 🧪 It also allows us to characterize and recommend the best filler wire grades for each application. ⚙️ And thanks to our integrated process - from steelmaking to wire drawing - we can tailor the chemical composition to meet customer-specific needs This capability is a game-changer for key sectors such as energy, naval, nuclear, aerospace, and defense. As the only French producer of integrated drawn wire, Ugitech is uniquely positioned to supply tailored filler wires for additive manufacturing - backed by 35+ years of welding expertise and 115 years of melting.

The 3rd General Assembly of the HYDREAMS project took place on the GENVIA site in Béziers – an inspiring meeting point for European innovation in high-temperature electrolysis and next-generation hydrogen systems. 🔬 Over three days, partners from across different European countries presented progress across the project – from recent burner tests at TU Graz and BFI (VDEh-Betriebsforschungsinstitut) and influences on scale formation of different materials stack design and advanced materials to system integration and sustainability metrics. This collaborative setting showed the strength of HYDREAMS as a truly interdisciplinary project, bringing together industry, research and application partners to accelerate the deployment of Hydrogen Combustion. 🙌 A warm thank you to GENVIA for the excellent hosting, and especially for the guided tour of the pilot production line and the 1st SOEL 200 demonstrator — an impressive milestone toward large-scale, efficient green hydrogen production.

Corrosion is one of the biggest long-term threats to reinforced concrete infrastructure, especially in chloride-rich environments like coastal areas, tunnels or bridges. In a recent study (with GERS - Gustave Eiffel University), Sébastien Mignocchi, research engineer at Swiss Steel Group, showed at the 2025 fib – International Federation for Structural Concrete – Fédération Internationale du Béton Symposium how duplex steels not only survive in aggressive environments – they succeed. In a session attended by engineers and researchers, our long-term study (over 10 years!) demonstrated that duplex stainless steels stay intact where carbon steels fail in less than a year. The benefits go beyond durability: Why it matters: ♻️ Lower lifecycle emissions – less repair, less replacement, fewer emissions 💶 Reduced maintenance costs – fewer interventions, longer-lasting performance 🌱 Green Steel option available – including our Stainless+ solution using recycled materials 🛡️ 10+ years of proven corrosion resistance – where carbon steel fails in less than 1 Because building sustainably starts with choosing the right materials.

  • What if we could recover valuable resources while improving efficiency? A groundbreaking project was initiated by our french production asset to install magnetic filtration units on quenching tanks in the annealing furnace line. The goal - to recover iron oxide-rich calamine sludge from the cooling process of wire rods. Now operational, this initiative has proven to be not only highly efficient but also highly sustainable. 💧 Water Savings: 1,000 m³ of water saved annually. 🌱 Lower CO₂ Emissions: Reduced truck traffic and fewer drainage operations = fewer emissions. ♻️ Circular Economy: Recovery of 200 tons of iron oxide sludge per year, reused in production. This project embodies a global approach to continuous improvement: economic gains, respect for the environment, improved safety and industrial performance. It’s a model of continuous improvement, supporting the transition to a more circular economy.
